Finally put it all back together, timing marks spot on, turned the crank over a couple of times and checked again all ok.
Turned over with key after a few cranks started like a tractor.
Turned off instantly and investigated.
Checked timing again, camshaft lined up ok, crankshaft out by ninety degrees.
Found that the plastic spacer off the top of the belt tensioner had dropped off and jammed in between the crank pulley and the belt.
So i've reset timing and expect valves to be bent pistons smashed etc.
As potential damage is already done, i've fired it up again for a few seconds, and sounds like a tractor.
Done a compression test, cold obviously, and all cylinders 110 psi.
With the belt moving that much i would have thought that the damage would have meant no compression.
Not looking forward to stripping it all down again.
Can it be something else?
Anybody had similar problem?
Cheers
Sorry to hear the bad news i would deffinatly take the head back off and check for hit marks/bent valves cracked pistons etc i got myne done a few weekes ago but it does look like it has done some damage to the turbo as it smokes now when i come to a stop and set off after boosting the turbo
If i have equal compression, doesn't this suggest valves ok?
it might sound like a tractor because the hydraulic tappets are refilling. if it has compression it will not have bent valves. try getting a cylinder leakage test done. this is more accurate than a compression test.
Tappets have been in an oil bath since removal, had it running for 15 secs or so and it sounds like a massive exhast leak more than anything mechanical. So i've stripped off heat shields, checked all bolts/nuts for looseness. Nothing obvious. Compression checked again, all pretty much equal.
I'll try and look a bit deeper tomorrow.
Might be a long shot mate but when you refitted the inlet mani you might have caught the little clip that holds the pcv pipe (bottom r/h corner) i did this and the car ran like ££££, try spraying wd in that corner.

Thanks for that, another thing i'll check. Can't see what wd will do.

If you spray wd on that area it will block the air leak for a second or so and the engine note will change, saves you taking the mani off to check.
