    DIY RIP Kit

I am thinking of replacing the flexi pipes on the intercooler as I've had one split, and I suspect I may have another one split too somewhere as I have the engine light come on the other night. I heard a pop and one of the intercooler pipes had blown off, but after reconnecting it and doing an ECU pull, the engine light is still on So I suspect I may have split another pipe somewhere.

I am handy enough with tools and everything to make it work, but I just wanna make sure I know what I'm doing.

On my '96 T5, the pipe from the top of the intercooler goes into the side of the engine, and the pipe from the bottom of the intercooler twists around goes up over the engine and down to the turbo.

Am I correct in thinking that to do the reverse flow, I just make the pipe from the top of the intercooler go over the top of the engine and to the turbo, and the pipe from the bottom of the intercooler go into the side of the engine?

    Cheers

Ahh, fair enough then, that's what I thought, just wanted to check before I did anything. I'll see about having a look at what bits of piping I need to get to do this Cheaper than getting a Samco hose kit LOL

The engine light won't go off on its own for a bit. I accidentally forgot to plug in a sensor after fitting some bulbs and the engine light came on. I reconnected the sensor and was gonna connect my laptop to clear the code, but I'm lazy and forgot and the light cleared after a few days.

Unless you have the older code reader under the bonnet, then you can reset it that way.

Apparently so, it shortens the run the air has to make before enteriing the engine, hence it has less time to heat up. It's supposed to help with throttle response too.

I'm mainly looking to do it cos it'll be much cheaper for me to do this than to replace all the normal flexible intercooler pipe sections, and look cooler I think too

According to the IPD website, their RIP kit reduces the intake temp by 12 degrees. So a homemade kit would have at least some advantage.

Volvo ditched the reverse flow because it was freezing the throttle body which says everything to me, the air must be nice & cold compared to the normal system

you can see by the comparison diagram theirs alot less turns on the RIP which helps get the air moving quicker

Is it better to have larger pipe size? Say 51mm to 60mm,then back down to 51mm! Or is it better to have the pipe the same size?

BT had an original Volvo RIP kit from the factory but there was a big reduction in lag when i made my own using 76mm, but i did upgrade to a Volvo 960 throttle body at the same time so not sure which made the most difference

Is the 960 throttle body a direct fit for the 850? If so, I'll see about upgrading that too.

I'll wait till I've done the car show at the weekend and I'll see about sorting out the intercooler plumbing then

you need to enlarge the hole in the manifold & extend the wires going to the TPS (throttle position switch), a flap sander makes easy work of manifold

if you want o do things a little cheaper you can use most of the original piping to make the rip kit but you will still need a length of straight pipe. doesnt look prety but does the job
