I've noticed some peoples bonnets lift up further than others.

There's a little catch on either side that rotates round to allow the bonnet to go vertical. As you lock the bonnet back down it returns the catches to their default position, restricting the movement until yuou release the catches again. Will try and post a picture later.

In this picture the catch is engaged, restricting travel of the bonnet:
Slide the catch down and the bonnet goes all the way up, like so:
