It's bloody expensive. I had a new key and fob for my 2001 S40 and a figure of around £300 sticks in my head. Sadly no dealers I'd recommend nearby...

FWIW my local Timpsons was able to cut a replacement key with no problem ('97 V70).

Remote locking fobs are another story....

You can pick up fobs on ebay
    http://cgi.ebay.co.uk/Volvo-car-alar...item439d2d1b13

or ring >>Salvo<< (Forum discount still applies) - I may have a spare and code them to the car using the 5 turns method.

I'm not sure actually that I have a key that works on the doors! I always use the fob.

I am in CloggieLand this week and will have a look when I get back.

How did Timpsons do the immobiliser chip in the base of the key??? They could probably cut the basic shape of the key (sufficient to open the doors but not to start the car) - unless they have moved on a lot since I last went there!

Depending on your car you can code some keys yourself as WD says - the older the car the more likely this is to work - what car do you have?

They have a machine that reads the code in your existing key then transfers it to the new key.

Not sure if all branches will have the same machine, but I had 2 keys done like this in Edinburgh with no problem. They both work fine.

Pretty much anything 1999 on will require software, so its unlikely that anyone could program this without VIDA (volvo download equipment). All dealers can do this, and some independent volvo specialists also have this.

I can supply keys and remotes, though you would still have to get them programmed locally. Keys and remotes are usually around 20% off retail price as a rule, though if you want a quote please send me the registration number in a pm or email.

You're right! Sorry, should have said "I still don't know..." - couldn't be arsed to search around...

    So pre-ME7.

Incidentally I went to a Timpsons today in the City of London and they hadn't a clue about car keys with immobiliser chips... so I guess it's not a standard service across all of their branches.

Hmm, so if I just get a key cut and coded just incase I lose it to keep me out of trouble?

Will I be able to get a fob coded without actually having one should this happen?

    Thanks guys

I probably do actually have a key but have in 3 years never actually used it. Even on the ferry where it said "Don't activate your alarm" - I just pushed the tabs down from inside.

Key fob coding is easy - just turn the key 5 times to pos II and on the fifth time press and hold the lock button - IIRC

That may be true for older cars, but I'm pretty sure it won't work on '97 onwards models.
