Pro-cut lathe (for skimming brake discs)

Hello everyone. Rather than replace my front discs with new ones i thought about getting them skimmed using this special machine. They don't even have to be removed from the car! My discs have been damaged by the previous owner fitting EBC red stuff (idiot) and seeing as there is a lot of life in them it would be the cheaper option. My pads are getting low anyway and i will replace them with oe.

Has anyone had theirs done or know of first hand experience or indeed recommend a garage in Kent that could do them for me?

i don't want this thread to turn into a debate over which pads are better than others, so please keep replies on topic, cheers

Can't say that I've ever heard of this sort of thing being done in situ although I will watch with interest....

if u do hav that option done, then make sure they dont go below the minimum thickness,
which if they lathe them to the min thickness then ur already due to change them,so id rather go for a new set,
& they arnt that expensive new so id save the cost & put it towards new ones personally

    Thumbs up

    Watch the two video's: http://www.ebcbrakes.com/automotive/pro_cut_lathe.shtml

Also here at the Pro cut website: http://www.ebcbrakes.com/automotive/pro_cut_lathe.shtml. The bloke at the Pro cut site rushes in the video like he's trying to prove a point however the end result is still the same.

I have found a Mitsubishi dealer near me that will do my front discs for £80. Being as the pads have to be removed to carry out the skimming then i will just supply them with brand new oe pads to replace the worn ones that they take out to do the job.

When was the last time you bought discs for a phase II V70R? I believe the discs are about £100 each! That is expensive in my book.

I know. Pads and discs from the dealer are about £300 per axle. Pads alone are £100.

There isn't much for minimal wear on the Volvo discs, i think it is 3mm, that's 1.5mm each face,

£100 i think is cheap, compared to AP's or Compbrakes discs at £200+ each.

What sort of reply is that? I'm not asking you to question my reason's for buying an R........and to quote your original reply to me said they aren't that expensive new and i would put the cost towards a new set of discs....to which i and Alistair rightly pointed out that, actually, phase 2 V70R discs ARE expensive, £100-45p each inc Vat!! The point i was trying to make is that buying a new set of discs at £200 a set of oe pads at £100 is a lot of bloody money, especially when the discs on the car are not even half worn (only on their first set of pads). So, for £80 i could get the slightly damaged discs (caused by EBC red stuff pads - heavy scoring on disc surface) skimmed and they would be totally flat with no run out, ie as good as new! Then when coupled with new, flat pads, the braking will be as it should be...awesome!
if i don't skim the discs and just fit pads then i will have to go through the rigmarole of bedding in for up to 1000 miles and even then there is no guarantee the brakes will be as good as a new set of discs and pads.

Do you get now my reasoning for this thread? I could save money and also have brilliant brakes again and i wanted to know ppl's thoughts on the matter, not a bollocking for buying the fastest car Volvo ever made

If i need to spend £300 on new brakes then i will, until then, this could be a cheaper and better option and one that everyone on the forum could benefit from.

i havnt got the fastest volvo ever made so NO i havnt,
im not questioning what youve bought,
im just questioning the idea of shaving more metal of an already worn disc,

So if he gets them skimmed it wont be long before he needs to replace them anyway so imo it's a false economy getting them done.

It's only 4 thou of an inch that is shaved of, that's 2 thou from each side. That's hardly going to significantly reduce the life of the discs. I don't know what the minimum thickness of the discs are, it must be more than 22mm. So they will only be skimmed if the skimmed disc falls within the minimum thickness otherwise they will be replaced.

If your car has some big score marks from previous pads I would think that 4 thousands of an inch would not be enough. I have just removed some genuine discs from my car as they were rusted over, I had a new spare set, so decided to skim them to keep as spares and I took off far more than 4 thou.

A 4 thou score isn't much at all, Have you got a pic of the offending disc, Sounds like the material in the pad was inferior that caused the disc to get damaged,

My mate has one of those machines and has a contract to skim brakes for the local police workshops, they obviously think it's cost effective to skim rather than replace.
