    S60 D5 - Can somebody clarify please...

    Morning

    My apologies, I'm an occasional user having been in and out of Volvo ownership for the past few years but I'm in need of some information and advice, I've had a search but the answers evade me!

    I'm looking to buy an S60 D4 manual (or an Audi A4...) but what I'm struggling to clarify is the engine spec. Am I right in saying in circa 2004/2005the engines were updated to 'Euro 4 spec' and thus had a power increase to 180bhp along with some minor cosmetic alterations?

    I have a budget set and an idea of what I'd like, however if somebody a bit more knowledgable than me could clarify if the S60 underwent a facelift as it were, during it's life. I've seen some 52/03 plate cars that tick the boxes for me, however I'm not sure on the engines spec/power and therefore am I unsure if a lower spec, but later car, would be the better buy.

    I previously drove an 06 plate S60 D5 on several occasions over considerable miles and it was a lovely car, hence my eagerness to buy on, but for some reason I have it in my head that the earlier cars have slightly different engines/spec? Can somebody clarify this for me.

    Yes- the later facelifted version (05 I think) has a more powerful engine but runs with the more restrictive environmental controls. Some debate on here as to whether or not this is the better option but my next car will be a D5 and I'll definitely be going for the facelifted version.

    There are various engine specs, I'm sure somebody can confirm.

    Typically pre 05 D5s are Euro III.

    Check with Volvo dealers but 06 on 185bhp cars are Euro IV

    Not sure about 2.4Ds as these have a 163bhp map but also check fuel economy as consumption in Euro IV cars is rumoured to be significantly higher.

    That, plus having exhausted Google, I would be right in saying that in 2005 the S60 was revamped - some slight cosmetic changes but more significantly had the D5 (182bhp/300lb/ft) engine fitted. Thus meaning the 06 car I drove for a while fell into this bracket.

    These cars seems to be a bit dearer (obviously!) so the cars that fall within my designated budget will be the earlier Euro III 2.4D (163bhp/250lb/ft) cars with the earlier lights and so forth. I'm assuming the basic diesels, the 120bhp - 130bhp cars, are best avoided?

    The Rica link was most usefull, it would appear the earlier 2.4D EuroIII engines are quite tuneable... the question now, do I spend the cash on an earlier, lower mileage car with nice spec or buy a later, higher mileage facelifted car? But it was seem the D5 Euro 4 engines (06 onwards) offer the best performance / economy. May have to up ones budget!

    This is one car that has caught my eye...



    The best S60 on the market at this price? ? 2.4 Diesel D5 turbocharged; Black; Good Condition; Manual. This car has all the toys: full climate control; dash-loaded 6 CD changer; inbuilt phone (via stereo speakers and dash mic, or via handset hidden in the centre armrest); full leather seats and leather and wood door and dash trim; "winter pack" (with auto-retracting power headlamp washers, heated front seats, additional traction control, heated wing mirrors); smart alloys; electrically adjustable front seats; split folding rear seats; electric windows all round; electrically adjusted wing mirrors; auto dimming rear view mirror; xenon headlamps; floor mats (carpets underneath are perfect); boot protecting rubber/plastic liner (carpet underneath is perfect). 135,000 miles with Volvo and independent specialist service history. Great condition for the age and mileage, drives extremely well. Taxed and MOT'ed until 6/10. Two owners: me, and the previous owner is known to me. £4,000 No canvassers or agencies.

    Now, am I correct in saying this will be the D5 Euro 4 183bhp car... facelifted headlights, 05 model year?

    Similary, I found this whilst browsing but it seems remarkably cheap...



    2005 (05 reg) Saloon 116,000 miles Manual 2.4L Diesel 116,000 miles, 4 Door Saloon, Grey, Diesel, Manual, Cruise control, Passenger airbag, Electric door mirrors, ABS, Central locking, Folding rear seats. £2,500.

    Again, would I correct in assuming this will also have the later D5 engine?

    Only ever seen 163bhp (D5 up to 05 - 2.4D 06 on) in the UK and 180 bhp (D5 06 on)

    So, is it possible to buy a Euro III 163 on a facelifted 05-on plate ??

    Reasoning- no bloody mpg-knackering DPF, and more tunable?

    CA54WFC is a model year 05 163bhp (120kw) D5 SE

    Can't read the reg on the other in full but it looks like the same to me. Thor 17" wheels were IIRC discontinued after 05 and it doesn't have the 06 facelift mirrors (side repeater in the mirror) so I would guess the same spec.

    Second one looks to be a bit of a bargain! Check its history. VERY carefully!

    The second one looks identical to mine! Mines a 53 plate, and Id be asking 4k for mine with 105k on the clock Seems VERY VERY cheap

    Ahh! That's very usefull info... it would seem then it is possible to get a facelifted car with the slightly older D5 (160bhp) diesel unit and thus it won't have the DPF as Tim has pointed out. On that basis, this could be exactly what I'm after... DPF's and tighter emission controls worry me for some reason, but I would prefer a facelifted car. So, on that basis these are the sort of thing I'm after.

    That's been most helpfull, but yes the second car does seem too cheap perhaps!

    Pre-2005 D5 = 163bhp, 340Nm, EuIII spec.

    Post-2005, Volvo differentiated the same engine block into 2 versions, badged as "2.4D" rated at 163bhp, 340Nm and the new "D5" rated at 185bhp and 400Nm. This meets the EuIV spec.

    The base engine of the EuIV is different from the EuIII versions and the power difference comes from different stock maps.

    However, the EuIV also has the dreaded "deisel particulate filter" that appears to affect the economy. Many people consider the EuIII as being more economic.

    The EuIII engines can also be told apart from the EuIV variety by the colour of the engine cover - EuIII is black, EuIV is silver.

    AFAIK, talking of manual boxes only, EuIII was only available in 5speed. EuIV 2.4D / 163bhp is a 5speed box, D5 185bhp is a 6speed unit but both have similar final drive ratios.

    Looking at the photos and info above, my guess is that the first is D5 185bhp version, the second is the 2.4D 163bhp, both being MY05 although the first one has a 54 plate so it may well be a very early EuIV version.

    For information, my V70 D5 was registered in Sept 2004 on a 54 plate but is a late model with the EuIII 163bhp engine.

    Another thing to consider is that the EuIII engine can be remapped by the likes of MTE/Rica/BSR, etc to around 190ish bhp, 400ish Nm. I have an MTE map on mine and it gave figures of 191bhp and 430Nm. Also economy (when driven with a light right foot, which, I'm afraid to say is all too infrequent) has improved by some 2-4mpg.
    The EuIV engines can be mapped to much higher levels, to the extent that Rica indicate 253bhp and 548Nm on their website. As the EuIV 2.4D and D5 engines are mechanically the same, both can be mapped to the same levels AFAIK.

    There have been 130bhp versions of the EuIII D5 but these were for continental Europe and were not available in the UK.

    I've noticed a 54 plate V70 D5 with 70k in the Manchester Evening News thsi week for £9995........

    Looked and read just like mine (even down to the Orestes wheels) until I noticed no spoiler and not lowered.

    Not sure about Volvo ones though. IIRC, early dpf systems used a solution of urea as part of the regeneration.

    I have noticed some talk on VOC (before the recent database crash which has probably wiped them out) about these dpf's giving problems if the cars are only used for trundling around town. They get blocked and require a trip to a main stealer for re-generation. AFAIK the best way to regenerate a dpf is go for a good blast down the motorway and the temperatures up.

    I also noted that it is illegal to remove a dpf from a vehicle fitted with one by the manufacturer.

    Perhaps so, but the best course of action is a broom handle, or one of the kits that are coming on the market to permanantly delete it.

    I bought an MY06 model and agree that they are a nice car, as you may well already know they manage around 600-650 miles per tank which is considerably less than the earlier models.     My thoughts exactly. The 06' D5 I had for a period was a very nice place to be and was a pleasure to cover considerable distance in, hence I'm swaying towards one over a similary spec'd and priced A4 or Vectra. At the time I was getting over 600 miles to a tank, although the cost of said tank could make your eyes water. It's all relative though.

    Interesting fact about the earlier 2.4D's getting better economy, this is certainly of interest. I suspect, following the information I've gathered so far, my best bet would be a 54/05 facelifted car with the earlier 2.4D (163bhp) powerplant. From what I can gather, this would appear to tick all the boxes for me at the momment. And yes, with a map, performance will be more than adequate.

    Again, thanks for your assistance gents. Now to find a suitable car.

    Assuming we are still talking about the later EuIV engine, even in original 163bhp as stock, tuned to the Rica indicated 253bhp and 548Nm -

    Erm, does that not answer itself? That's some gogo..........

    I think I've seen that this Rica map is some £700 including the new "softloader" (the old PPC unit is discontinued).

    On insurance, I was told that if the bhp increase in more than 20% over stock manufacturers quote then be prepared to your wallet raped and pillaged .

    My 17% increase from 163 to 191 (and yes, they did ask me what the map was expected to produce even though I went down the lines it's for the economy increase, 'onest guv!) gave me an £80 premium increase .
