We had the ETM on Christine done, they fitted a Magneti Marelli unit saying it was a new unit. It died as I found out there are no new Magneti Marelli units the company went bust. So she went back and they fitted another Magneti Marelli unit, that died, so I hit the roof and they fitted a Bosch unit. I was told that Volvo would help with the cost of a new unit as the warranty had been extended on the unit, it seems that someone took a garage to court and won a case. The unit was not fit for purpose and the court said it should last a lot longer that it did.

They did "help" with the cost, £23 towards the total which by the time they had finished was well over £1200.

SO don't let them fit a Magneti Marelli unit they are just bodged old units that have failed already.

Did you know the EU says that you can't claim that drinking water prevents dehydration. So now you know for sure what many of have known for years that the EU is run by a bunch of nutters.

Anyone know what Volvo's latest pricing / policy is on this? I was just quoted:
    ETM for 2001 V70 T5
£468 total price (part, software, fitting, VAT)
    1.8h labour inc software update
    £136 for the part
    £who knows for the software
I told them that I paid half that last time round, and they said “last time round?” I said “yes, I’ve had two of these before” and they went quiet...

Hmm, "last time round" was on a 1999 T5 though, so the simpler one to change. Cheers for the input though! Still working on it.

    So to close this one...

I paid £136 + VAT for the part (that's cost price I believe)
I spent 2-3h cursing and doing the swap on my driveway
I paid £60 inc for the software loading

Total about £220 and 3h of my time in the cold and a trip to the dealer. Versus £468 for the dealer price. You can decide if your time is worth the difference in price!

Thanks to Stuart at SW Autos for the advice on the swap and cheapest way out of the problem.

I would be inclined to hit them with a claim and tell them that the units were not fit for purpose. It has been proved in court that the ETM is faulty and the court said that the unit should last longer than the time it does.

If this is now your third it shows that the unit are defiantly not fit for purpose.

You should ask for the Bosh replacement the Magnetti Marelli ones are just refurbished rubbish.

I had the same thing on Christine and threatened to take Taunton Volvo to court if they failed to sort out the problem.

If you do some research on ETM you will find that Volvo extended the warranty on them to 200,000 miles, but you do have to have the full service history. However you can point out that Volvo have admitted that the unit is a problem and they will bow under pressure.

Don't take what the dealers say as gospel it's not, the bloody Magnatti Marelli units are plain crap and Volvo know it.

now perhaps My maths is wrong, but as I read it, Job time is 1.8hrs and so is all a main dealer is allowed to charge for fitting

only difference between the way you did job, and taking car, handing keys to dealer and collecting working car is the 1.8hr labour charge for fitting unit

so 468-220= £248 divide that by 1.8 = over £137 an hour labour charge

you have earnt effectively £83 an hour for working on car in cold, I'd happy spend 3 hours in cold working on car for £83 an hour, in fact I'd offer you 10% forum discount and do it for £72.70 an hour, if you keep me supplied with tea
