IMHO when I did the freedom test drive - V70R MY2006 vs the same year S60 T5 - I found the S60 T5 more fun to drive, the 2.4L T did not seem as encumberd with the AWD which IMHO makes the car feel solid but more sluggish.

I would also worry about modding the later Rs - they have too much metal taken out of that block. I hear nightmare stories about cracked liners!

I drove a Brera with 265bhp and 4wd - it felt SO slow because the traction was perfect!

sometimes a little drama adds to the occassion, you need big power to push a 4wd system... OK so it'll be more refined, faster and quicker point to point...

... but you won't get as sweaty and excited driving it there

I believe the T5 engine is a 2.4 producing 260bhp. I might be wrong but i think that is correct.

In the later models, yes, but initially the T5 engine remained the same, ME7 2319cc 16T. The revised engine I believe came in with the 2004 facelift. it was a 2.4lt engine but iirc still used the 16T.

Yes and if you had an R then you got the same 2319cc engine but with a larger 18T turbo.

This thread has been done to the death before many times. It really depends on what you want. Personally i think you shouldn't compare the two cars as they are obviously different. Regarding the AWD systems...well i never had any problems (other than reconditioning my prop shaft cv joints due to lack of grease) with my '99 Laser R in the 3 years i had her. I adhered to the 2mm tread rule and rotated the tyres every six months, diff oils topped up every service too. With the later Rs (03-) you don't have to be so cautious. The Haldex system has been proven to work well with Audi. Mainly because the awd is controlled electronically rather than via a torque tube on the old system.

Both are robust and generally people only had problems mainly down to lack of maintenance. When you take the car to a dealer they do all the necessary checks and maintenance as per the schedule of maintenance and then present you with a big bill at the end. Once out of warranty, then this is where the problems start. Most people are not mechanically minded nor do they really give a shi t when it comes to car maintenance..so the car will generally get neglected. A few years and a few owners later and then the current owner soon finds him/herself on forums like this, slagging the cars off saying they are crap and cost too much and always break down! And you wonder why?!?!

Like everything in life....look after it and it will look after you.

To answer the question...are AWD a costly expense and problematic? Answer: NO.

Everything happens for a reason. For example; Take the Angle gear box on late R models. There is nothing mechanically wrong with them at all. However if you don't do regular maintenance and get underneath and check for oil seepage then you won't know if your angle gear output seal is leaking, 10,000 miles later you will have no gear oil left and the Angle gear will chew it's self up and quite rightly 'give up the ghost'. Costing it's owner a mere £680 + fitting + Vat.

Bottom line is, if you like a T5 and don't care for all the 'extras' on the R's (including performance) then don't buy one. If you can afford to maintain an R then you will never regret owning one because as far as i'm concerned, the rewards far out way the problems you may or may not get with these cars.
Also, R models will always turn heads, T5's won't. T5 at the end of the day is just a badge and looks just like another V70.

Sacked the secretary. This is weird....even thou mine is plated as an '03 the car itself is only recognized as an '04-.
The above information would confirm this as the R AWD trim wasn't brought in until 04. Anyone care to comment?

I would say that that above info maybe incorrect as i have an V70/S60R brochure and it is dated 2003. So that would imply that the variant 6 - R AWD 2.5T (high pressure turbo) was indeed introduced in 2003 and NOT 2004.

the 2.5 engine in the late volvos is the same engine as the 2435 lpt engine all they did was put a longer stroke crank in it .i know this when i built my v70 lpt engine 2435 i fitted s60r conrods and pistons in the block which by the way are forged to take the extra stress.and when brought the piston up to tdc the piston crown was down the bore about 1 to 2 mm .which was good for me running a bigger turbo and lower compression.but it is only the R models that have forged rods

That's normal Al, a 52 plate means it was registered between September 2002 and February 2003. My Honda is a 53 plate but was registered in January 2004.

Maybe your car was an early press dealer demonstrator model. Probably been ragged to death by J Clarkson on Topgear. Probably explains why all the bits have been replaced lol.

Who recognizes it as an 04, Volvo's database?

Ha Ha... The only cars tested by the Top gear loons were a green S60R and a green V70R.

The bits have all been replaced cos the second owner was minted (shoulda seen his house!!) and i guess money was no object. In the period from April '07 to the day he handed over the car to me Jan '10 he had it into the dealer 4 times for normal servicing and remedial repairs and the total price of all the invoices is a cool £5403!! That's £163 a month on servicing and repairs.

Tomorrow my car is in the garage having the front spring seats replaced, the rear wishbone bushes replaced with new oe and the front wishbone bushes with powerflex bushes. Also the Diff oils checked/topped up and the Exhaust manifold >> downpipe bolts need tightening up (it's blowing a little on cold start up).
