Have I got a different turbo fitted?

Browsing through some old paperwork that came with the car when I got it I found that it had a new turbo fitted in November 2005. The part number is shown as 8601238.
After checking on various sites this seems to be for a T5R and is a TD04 HL-16T-7.
    As the car is a 1996MY 855 T5 is this a result?
And does it explain why I have trouble with traction?

Iirc correctly I think your car should have had a 15g or whatever it's called and as such you have a free upgrade

Not as quick as my old t5 though!

i'm sure the T-5R had a 15g, the extra bhp was created by the ECU having a 30second overboost. The manual 850R had a 16t

The interesting thing is that the car is an automatic. The Engine ecu number is 0261 203 074 which is the correct one for a t5 automatic. However there isn't any sign of the retaining nut/bolt thing on the strap that goes across the ecu so has it been taken out and chipped?
Even with good tyres on it is a bit difficult to maintain grip when I kickdown and watching the standard boost gauge at high revs it does seem to show a marked increase for a short time.

sure the ECU retaining strap didn't come in till 1996 so you may not of had one

The t5r's come with 15g so you have had an upgrade, also no strap on the ecu box like p fan said on cars before '96, if you want to know if its been mapped keep your eye on your boost gauge standard goes about 3/4 into the white with a map it will leave the end of the white section by a couple of mill then settle by the end

    looks like you may have a 16t after all, but off a S70 not a 850 T-5R

actually, looking at the list it just says S70 doesn't actually say T-5 so may not be 16t

As the part number is a OEM number on the invoice from Braydon Motors who carried out the work it seems a logical place to start.

How would you suggest that the turbo is identified otherwise?

I have found these two sites which appear to give a definitive list of turbo applications.

    http://www.arturbo.co.uk/catalogue_turbos.asp?Make=42
    http://www.dieselevante.it/turbochar...rca=98&idcat=2

I look forward to your comments

i'm afraid both those sites must use the same source for there information because they are both wrong. The T-5R uses a 15g like normal T-5's, they were only made in 1995 not 96-97 as it says on there. They've got there info mixed up with the 850R manual which does come with a 16t & made in the correct years they state

what else is on the invoice as i think the downpipe would need changing as well to swop from a 15g to a 16t

The invoice shows part number 30637866 "O ring turbo pipe 850", part number 9471644 "tube", part number 1389574 "elbow" and an inlet manifold gasket.
The tube cost £21.40 plus vat>

the O ring is the seal on the oil return pipe to the turbo
the tube is from the PCV system
& the elbow is on the end of the breather pipe on the inlet manifold

atleast they've done the PCV clean as well which is always a good idea
