    Unhappy Locking wheel nut problems.

    There i was bearing the snow and wind changing my wheels around to get more grip, when i got to my 4th wheel the locking wheel nut slipped off. I checked it and tried again with a little less effort and it slipped again. Looking at it again i discovered that it has worn out.

    I need a replacement locking wheel nut lock but i can't find any markings on it to get a new one. I will problem need to replace the whole set after which is a real pain. I think its a volvo locking wheel nut?

    Any ideas in this matter.

    i'd get a removal tool from Halfords & replace the complete set LINK

    i've heard the ribbon locking wheel nut key type are weaker than the 3 pin ones

    i had this problem a while ago, except my key had slipped and rounded off.
    the only way i could get them off was to hit a 19mm multi socket (not the hex type) over the wheel nut. i found out once you do this the socket won't do it again, i went through 4 lol

    worth a try, hth

    yes i have but if there is nothing for it to grip onto then they are rubbish

    my bro in law has a snap on set, basically it shears and cuts into the stud and grips like mad then just undo!

    thought it might be worth a mention

    Those 3 pin ones are just as bad, if not worse!

    These are mine preferred type, they can still be a pain where the key is worn. The problem I find, is that people tighten them up too much.

    wack a socket over it 19m and take it off i used some wd40 helped alot and only used 1 socket to take all my mates off just an idea

    get a piece of bar and whack the centre of the bolt using something like a 4pound lump hammer just to aid breaking the contact between bolt and hub. then find a 19mm/imperial socket that you can whack over the bolt. (be prepared to write this off) breaker bar onto that and Robert's your Mother's brother!
    i found one socket that required heating with a torch before knocking on then cooling it had enough purchase not to slip.
    replace with normal bolts if you can and the problem NEVER comes back!

    I have a spare set of the thinner locking wheel nuts if you want to buy them...

    £12 delivered. (ribbon type off a C70, so should suit the 850)

    I have had and solved this issue - Halfords unlockers do not generally work on standard fit McGard locking bolts unless you have access to an air-wrench - and even then it may not work. First, you could use long nosed pliers to ease off the burrs on the unlocking key: it may work. If not, indeed anyway since you will be needing a new one, look though any paperwork you have for a McGard/Volvo locking key code (I found mine under the spare wheel!) and you can contact the McGard company in Germany at info@mcgard.de - don't worry, they speak good English - a replacement should be FREE if you have the original papers. If not and you do not have a number, take a pic of the bolt end and email them, https://www.wheellockkeys.com/homepa...bestellung.php they will work it out (promise) and for 18 Euros (or two for 30 Euros) will send you one in about five days.
