Realistic BHP Increase for 850 2.0 20v NA

    Hi all,

    I currently own a Volvo 850 2.0 20v 1994 Estate (143BHP standard)

I'm looking to inprove it's performance, current mods:

Cold Air Intake & Cone filter - approx 2-5 BHP
Improve Air Delivery- N/A Engines w/ VVIS Mod - Proven 9 BHP upto 4100 RPM

    Poss fitting a chip - approx 10BHP

    Total = Max 167 BHP

Do these figures sound realistic & any other modification tips.

    Many Thanks.

    Chris.

A remap mate, my 2.5 10v can be remapped from 140 to 170 so I'm sure it could do somthing for you.

Best thing to do is sell it and buy a T5 - if power is what you are after?

If you really want to get a decent power upgrade without changing upto a T5 then getting it to breath better would be your first priority, fit a decent filter and a good exhaust system, this will give you another 10-15bhp, after that you could try speaking to people like kent cams about higher lift camshafts. You could look at porting the head although that would entail removing the head from the car. There's a guy over on Volvospeed who did a serious amount of tuning to a 2.5 N/A and got good results, in the end it all depends how determined you are and how deep your pockets are.

cant add much more than tomcat has said or the others as for getting a T5 but again depending on what you want from it and where you want to go will limit yor options,... and as for reference the btcc 850's where 2.0 20v N/A 280bhp...(ish) i know its around that figre but throttle bodies seem to work wonders haha .... or just drop a 2.5L 20v into your bay. 170hp out the box but then a T5 would be just as easy providing 225hp

My thoughts entirely - except I would get an R (OK Dave I agree, there is not a lot in it and T5s are soooooooooo cheap these days - mind you so are Rs). Unless you are really strapped for cash, the relative running costs are not massively, greater and you can't make a silk purse out of a sow's ear and all that

I should add that you MUST hitch a ride in a decent R/T5 to appreciate the massive power that is so cheaply available

I was more thinking of the Engine - T5. Obviously you can get varieties with that engine.

You are correct in saying that the P2 2.4 *20v* cars are available with 140 or 170bhp, and the software in the ECU is the only thing different between them.

However, the P1 10v 2.5's sadly dont suddenly turn into a 170bhp machine with a software update. I think 10-15bhp gain might not be too optimistic with remap, intake and exhaust mods though.

So, has anyone transplanted a T5 motor into their 10v Fenix5.2 engined x70 car yet, and married the t5 ecu / engine loom upto the rest of the car???

that was only on the p2 engines as they all used 20v engines and just had a different map on the ecu .

His T5 must have been shagged then....... what is the 2.5 20v, 170bhp as standard? T5 is 225bhp..... no way does k&n,exhaust + manifold add on 50+bhp.

I haven't had a remap done to my car, I can only go by what Rica themselves have listed on the website.

    http://www.rica-uk.com/viewcar.aspx?vehicle=159

There are no listings on the rica website for the 2.0 model however as they can do it to the N/A 2.4 like mine I'm sure they could do it to the 2.0.

my 2.0 20v had a 144 whp with a few mods exhaust, filter and later inlet manifold, and then i put a 2.5 20v engine with the same mods and relearned the ecu and that was on a 2.0 20v gearbox .i also said that i could keep up with his 850 t5 not overtake it.anyway it is not all about power its also how the car is setup ,the ratios in the 2.0 20v box are good for fast exceleration and with 2.5 20v engine it did surprise people in alot more powerful cars than mine.ps don off kalmore union uses the same box in his s70t5 for this reason

I was just thinking mate, your engine should be the same as mine. It is really expensive with Rica but if you were actually getting an extra 30brake it might be worth it. Then again if you take the price of your 850 and add the price of a remap from rica you'd get a very nice T5, possibly even an R.

I think I will keep going as I am something like 7 years and 50k now in the 855...

However if I do change I have my heart set on the following cars:

    P2 V70 T5 / D5 (1st choice)

    BMW 530d Touring - (hide's behind sofa)

Merc E320 Cdi Estate - (hide's under sofa)
    Volvo 855 2.5 10v CD

Its got everything except a turbo - boo hoo...
