Ever since i bought my latest R she has had a few slight knocks and rattles (none that can't be cured). One that escaped me because of the foul snowy weather was the 'clunk' clunk' every time i changed gear. Its wasn't until a few days later (once home) that it became apparent. Praying to god it wasn't the gearbox i started to replace the obvious knocks ie Front spring seats, wishbone bushes front and rear, (drop links are fine) as are the very recently replaced shocks (£430 each). After swapping the front for rear tyres on the O/S, after tightening the wheel bolts and brand new locking bolts i grabbed the wheel and rotated from left to right.....clunk, clunk, clunk, clunk.
I climbed underneath and grabbed the half shaft with the wheel on a right lock and blow me!! i thought the CV was going to collapse. The movement inside the boot was excessive. I think the only reason it has not collapsed is because the turning circle on these cars is so poor that the wheels are not allowed to turn too much preventing the CV from exploding into a pile of metal and ball bearings.
A quick phonecall to trusty SW's and CV's for £99ea plus fitting. Volvo don't do CV's on these cars they do drive shafts at £275 each!!!
So, guess where my car will be in the not too distant future? (thank fu ck it's not the gearbox)
