Well I deliberately have done FA with the car today. Smithy reckons I need a new VVT pulley - so I will probably order one tomorrow.

It's only a thought because they have been known
To go and that would also explain
    The cam timing being out.

My VVT was out but it didn't take Tim long to resolve the problem. Quite a few get incorrectly set up and I'm not even sure that all main dealers can get it right. Symptoms can be subtle but erratic idle and driveability issues are common - sometimes not diagnosed as the ECU allows a wide range of adaptation in VVT operation and symptoms can consequently be intermittent with misleading codes. I'm not sure how reliable the units are but just be sure it was set up correctly before buying a new one - a quick Googling suggests that they are north of £100. I'm not knocking your skills in aligning it just letting you know people §§§§ the process up reasonably frequently!

Well a new day dawned & it's still nice outside. Finally figured out what I was doing wrong. By winding anti-clockwise against the crank locker - this was allowing the exhaust cam to wind backwards against the VVT - thus making it look like the cams are not aligned. I am satisfied that the timing is good for now. Good enough to try the compression test again.

So I have tensioned the belt again & reinstated the starter. Bad news is the battery is too flat to retest the compression. Wife is stealing the diesel to go to see her parents & I don't have a battery charger - so I'll have to get on my bike and go down to Halfords.

Either way I think I will still replace at least the bolt holding the VVT pulley on if not the pulley itself. TBH I don't really know how to tell if the VVT pulley is faulty or not - just that I'd feel happier replacing it.

turbo came off last week & went to Turbo Dynamics - intial feedback, when I spoke to Tom @ T/D yesterday is that bearing feels ok to him - but they are going to strip it down to the CHRA, put some oil pressure through it & spin it up on their balancer any way just to be sure.

I have essentially stripped the top half of the engine back to just the bear head. All that remains on it are the cams, belt, rocker cover. I too am praying that against the odds I have gotten away with it.

Battery last night was only just strong enough to lock the car. So I unlocked it, left the bonnet on just the safety catch & pushed the tabs down by hand.

Bad news I'm afraid. Battery is charged

1 came up to 12 bar. 2 is still down at 10 bar - rest are as they were - 12 bar.

Guess I have no choice now but to take the head off. Bummer.

That doesn't sound good mate, lets hope it hasn't damaged a piston as well.

Can I do a compression test now that the rocket cover & the cams are out? Probably not.

Well there are no marks on the cam lobes - and the tops of the lifters (silly name really - surely "pusher downerers" is better LOL) look fine.

Nope tomorrow the head is coming off. Then I might know something - or I might stand there scratching various body parts (not uncommon for me - LOL).

Keeping everything crossed for you WD. Be a shame for it to dent your wallet after building such a bang on engine. Like your term for lifters too.
Ps that picture of it on 19's you posted is possibly the nicest c70 I've seen. You need those wheels back in your life even if it does look a right sleeper on the comets.

Tell that to the thieves that half-inched them. They were imported from the US & cost a lot of dosh. Company that sold them to me no longer exists.

I am thinking I will do some extra bits on the pieces I have off. Improve the head a bit more.

Polish the exhaust manifold & get it coated. Get the DP coated too.

Not looking fwd to finding that my cylinders are goosed or something else even worse.
