Can I borrow it anyway, as my set is unlikely to turn up before Smithy does? Are you in this evening?

Many thanks to Colin for the locking tool lend. I've put the crank locker in the hole behind the starter motor.

I think we may have a winner? Given that the locking tool will not align - I used the spacer that comes with the kit to demo how much out the slots are in the back of the cam.

Inlet cam from the cambelt end shows good alignment with the camcover mark, which I've highlighted.

Exhaust cam sprocket teeth also align (it's difficult getting the shot straight on), but around the bolt you can see where it has moved vs where it usually sits.

next step is to get the head off & see what's what.

I'm expecting a bent valve now in number 2 given the compression results.

thats not good but i dont think its out enough to bend a valvo. if was bent i think compression would be a lot lower. id reset cam belt and vvc and do another compression test. i wouldnt be very impressed with the company who done engine build. are all the cam pullets tight. is it possible that the vvc has slippef

Thought the knocking sounded in time with the firing of the engine as graham has said re time and do a compression test also listen to how it sounds, tbh with the power of the engine I would like to strip it and have a good inspection its obviously been hitting so most likely will have bent a little

just a off chance but could the knocking not be the vvc banging about. i agree with pete though. id def be stripping it but id asking the question of the company who reconditioned the head.

can you get a asstant to crank the engine while you use a metal bar as a stephascope to try and pin point the noise just incase you can see anything once head is off. more clues you have to start with the easier itll be if its not so obvious.

The VVT pulley sits on the end of the cam - there is no key. It works via oil pressure - sorta like a cam within cam. If the cam has slipped relative to the pulley that much then it is entirely possible that the piston has tapped a valve out of alignment. I am wondering whether to attempt to re-time it before taking the head off? Got to be at least 1 tooth off ATM on the exhaust cam.

1 tooth wont bend a valve. even though its hydraulic the bolts must be loose enough for it to move. it cant .do anyharm to take belt off reset timing. will the vvc need retensioning the same was as the 2.4's do. if in doubt whip plugs out and turn by hand. what ever you do though dave keep.your chin up and keep your cool. i feel frustrated for. if i was closer id hope along and lend a hand

3 times I have tried to time up that bloody exhaust cam, put the reference tool on the back of the cams, locked it against the crank locker - popped the cambelt off - turned the pulley on the cap fully clockwise & popped the belt back on - tensioned it up.

Each time - I rotated the engine by hand, clockwise, and each time the final position on the back of the cam is wrong - similar to the shot above, with the exhaust cam off by 5 - 10 degrees to the horizontal - meaning I can't put the cam lockers back in

    Baffled.

Set the crank correctly (not TDC) lock both cams on number 5 cylinder end and turn the exh pulley all the way D.O.R. then refit the the belt. once tensioned tighten the 3 8mm bolts in each pulley if you get my drift.

hope that makes more sense dave. best of luck with it today

I remember when we had the VVT unit changed on the R, our mechanic had a nightmare timing it up, and he's ex Volvo.
