Wife overlocked a section of heat wrap to form a heat shield for the new AFR sensor loom. Fits nicely into the space. A bit of fettling to do (suspect that there is a small exhaust leak) - or maybe just burn off from some oil or something. Should be able to get the gauge in reasonably easily - though the plug is quite large, so getting it through the OS firewall may be a small issue. Getting there!

That's great, hopefully this will iron out the issue. Good to she Betsy progressing again, I now have to pull my finger out and get on with my projects, the have been waiting way to long now for attention.

Our new house has a steep drive and getting in and out of the garage is a PITA, especially with the low ground clearance on BR coilovers. I finally finished the necessary ramps needed to get Betsy over the threshold & more over managed to get her out of the garage completely. So I was able to go out on Sunday evening for a brief shakedown up the A68 just to the top of the Anglo-Scots border (awesome hairpin bends - its almost alpine). The good news is that the SBC boost controller and the ported W/G means that the overboost is now resolved. Held exactly what I told it to do (I only went upto 1.25 bar). Pulls smooth as silk. I need to get my wheel balance & alignment checked but as far as I can tell - there are no significant leaks.

Also my replacement oil sensor (the old one snapped off the plug) for the SBC. I was worried that after all this time they would stop supplying it. Ideally I would like to tap the sump properly so that is wasn't necessary to twist the loom every time I change the oil.

Epic sunset pics looking back towards my new home. Didn't stay long - it was bloody freezing up there!

Next on the list is to fit the replacement sensor and get the AEM AFR gauge wired in and connected. Hopefully then I can book a dyno session and get the mapping finished/ optimized.Name: 20220515_203657.jpg

Bricking it a bit now. Going to Sitech in Dumfermline on Friday for a RR day. I feel very nervous about what may or may not happen. Looking for 1.5 bar and see what kind of figures Betsy makes. Been a long time coming.

Good luck Dave, will have been a long time since she was last on a rolling road I guess, it will be interesting to see what she makes.

Did you get the AFR gauge fitted in and working..??

Yes I am very pleased with the install - but unfortunately it doesn't provide data logging as I originally thought it would.

The mount is excellent and the vent still works though the direction of flow is now fixed, but you can still close the shutter at the back.

    Wow - What a Day!

I got to Sitech Racing in Dunfermline just before 1 pm. We put Betsy on the dyno & started fairly gently around 1.25 bar just to see what was going on. We did 14 runs in just under 90 minutes tweaking the FPR and the methanol as we went.

The best figures are lower on torque than my 2014 run on HLM however Shem did say that the values in the original map were fairly suicidal as witnesses when that engine let go at Shakespear. Simon at Sitech thought that was probably as a result of the EGT's getting too high which warped the head slightly. Hopefully that can't happen now with the ARP studs and less aggressive map

She's definitely more than 400 - maybe as high as 420 at the crank. Still it's a good day and Simon seemed to know his stuff. The graph profile is very smooth and feels progressive on the road & also we have made the idle a little better too.

These are the numbers I recorded using Torque pro during run 8 which is very similar to the ones above - Torque pro only polls once per second.

The meth timing seems better and you can see how well the IATs are managed once it starts.
There are a few more bits to do & maybe one day I can go back and see if we can't squeeze some more torque out?

Good to see You and Betsy survived the rolling road, the water/meth certainly does make a big difference to the IAT's, I must get my gauges fixed in olive, so I can see what's happening at the intake and at the TB, I mistakenly plugged them in wrong and fried them I'm guessing as they don't read right at all.

As for your Aem AFR gauge not datalogging, did you buy the failsafe one, that's the one I fitted and it datalogs 45-60mins or something like that.

Thanks, but my wmi is fine, it's the auxillary IAT guages I fried, I have new ones but need to mill down the plastic casings to get them to fit my mounting plate in the spare din radio slot.

Here is a sobering thought after the recent euphoria. The 2014 graph on the dead MJA engine in red vs. the ShemTek engine in blue ( from Friday last) . I am giving away a lot of torque lower down -

I seem to be a fair way down on torque particularly around 4.5K rpm on the ShemTek map vs. the old 19T map. Bear in mind that Shem said at the time that the mapping was almost suicidal. I wonder if I should "shut up and put up" with it & also if you run the dyno from 1700 rpm in 4th vs. the 3K that Hamish did whether that has any bearing on it?

I'd guess Hamish ran from 3k to avoid any possible rod bending low down issues, as for mapping have you thought of using Vast, I'm sure JamesT5R has used them with good results and all done remotely.

I emailed Simon @ Sitech and he wondered if the new ported W/G might not be shutting properly so I think I might put an extra turn on the pre-load & see if it spools a bit quicker.

Shem is a good tuner - but really hard work. Betsy was with him for the best part of 2 years & progress was painfully slow - I had more patience than most hospitals & saints combined - in the end I got the mechanical work completed but there was little or no interaction with regards getting the most of out of it. The fuelling is fine. My problem is that the vast gaps in time - I forget how to work the SBC properly. I also think Shem didn't know how to & his solution was to go aftermarket ECU, which is too much now for me. So no - I won't be re-looming the car from scratch. It's taken 10 years to get here. There is some element of compromise. I am just looking to finesse this and just enjoy it - get some clowns back together and see if we can't get to York Raceway/ Hill climb/ track day/ RR day or just a car park.

I've been re-reading the Blitz SBC instructions again today & I think I can tweak the boost map to increase the gain (rate at which the turbo spools up) & get more torque earlier on. She did it in 2014 and I think I can have the 500Nm again too.

Yeh I had my T5 initially mapped by Shem and I have to say it was an absolutly appauling job and it took him 6 months to still leave my car incomplete. I have always had issues finding tuners for my car.

But I found a good garage down in Portsmouth called PSL performance who specialise with ECU on the bench jobs and thy did a brilliant job. So if you are ever stuck for mapping, they are defenitly work having a word with. They mapped my 2009 Volvo S40 T5 to 410bhp, completly pulled out everything Shem did.

I have yet to master my blitz boost controller, it's way more simple than yours, but I don't see how mine can see rpm and don't believe it does, then again I have yet to get olive back on the road to test it anyway, so it will be a while yet, good to see your still pushing on with Betsy
