The polishing of the combustion chambers showed no evidence of the 3 angle valve job and given all the work done I have sent the head away to be professionally reworked and they said they would back cut the valves too, to remove the lip on the back - and thanks to Jamie @ PFV I have replaced the inlet valve below

It is increasingly unlikely that the SSB will be ready for York but I will give it my best shot. If not I will come anyway and bring the cabbie.

Thought about possibly using a clear coat lacquer but that itself is problematic, given that I would have to use rattle cans. With oversprays and all that malarky - I thought it will just have to do.

The aluminium reacts with the o2 in the air instantly, so the layer of aluminium oxide will be there as soon as I expose it thus will always be dull - I think it will just have to do & I can maintain it as & when, with metal polish and a flexible line on my dremel. The main work is done (i.e. the flat and polish).

I don't really know what else you can do - it is not like paint where you can wax it ?

Some of the exhaust valves will be re-cut too to remove the pitting.

    Maybe some sort of silicone?
There's high temperature clear lacquer on the market, its not cheap and with basic masking and some patients, it's Do-able

    Captain Casting Flash strikes again

In my ruthless pursuit for additional bling and engineering efficiency - namely the faster the air flows, the better the engine goes - I have been working up my inlet manifold.

Before we started - it is pretty crudely put together - 2 halves sandwiched together, casting flash everywhere.

These had all been port matched on the previous evolution - but only the 1st inch of the runners had been touched. I didn't really want to remove any more material from the gasket ends, but I was going to improve the finish on them anyway.

First I cleaned off the crap off the outside with a brass brush and brash cleaning wheel.

The seams in the bowl and down the runners were flattened wit' tungsten carbide burrs.
Then I set to with the 80 grit on the long shank. I used the port where the vacuum for the brake servo comes off and was able to reach 80% of the inside of the plenum but sadly some flash had to be left untouched.
Then 120 then 360 and finally some speed-clic buffs for the dremel. Last stage was a cutting polish. I'd say in all about 12 man hours on the inside.

I am doing cosmetic work on the outside and that is nearly done - so for now you can see the work completed on the inside...

I don't know if it will make that much difference given the angles the air has to turn to get into the cylinder head, but I am happy with the result and I am certainly getting better at metal polishing.

To be honest there are 2 things here - I am tired of being a push over when it comes to farming out work, so I am keeping the oversight much tighter and yes I am a bit anally retentive/OCD.

If I had the wherewith-all to do it all in house on this evolution - then I would. I seem to be learning the hard way. But there again - I know the risks when pushing this hard against the design. Hussein Holland in the US had that XC70 AWD thing up for 40K miles with 450bhp+ - so it is difficult pitching my reliability expectations versus what I have seen worldwide. The bike destroying 667bhp C70 (speeding.nu sponsored) is dead - though it was rolled rather than blew up.

I question my sanity on a daily basis when it comes to this project. E.g. I saw a DB9 last night in silver and thought surely V12 goodness would be better?

Anyway I think I am fairly settled on going lightweight, though I am going to keep the ICE - namely the Alpine head-unit, speakers and amp. This will mean more money on seats, I was going to recover some old ones. Not sure about junking the A/C as it still worked perfectly well.

Always better doing stuff yourself wherever you can Dave, that way you know exactly what's been done rather than relying on someone else's say so.

Manifold looks lovely, lots of hours with the dremel id say.
Are you going to cover it with the injector shield or is that shiny aswell?

Already had a shiny one from years back...

and the dremel was used but mostly sanded back using my rotary polisher, bosch multitool and various flap wheels

I ran a 19T turbo on this car for 7 years, eventually achieving 320bhp. The most successful mix (on standard internals) was with a larger FMIC, Bosch Green injectors, custom ATM remap, IPD ram air induction kit, home made RIP kit, feritta dp with 200 cel race cat and miltec exhaust. Boosted to 1.25 bar. Was very good on track. I had standard 302mm brakes with ferodo DS2500 pads all round, quaiffe LSD, thicker ARBs (from IPDUSA), eibach prokit springs and bilstein b6 dampers.

Some of this will becoming available soon because I am moving to BC coilovers, which for a track day machine would be widely recommended.

Quick word about polishing the interior of the intake manifold and ports.

Usually a 180 grit finish is about as fine as youd want to go, further polishing wont acheive anything other than look nice for a while and as youve undoubtedly found out it takes ages.

Nice work on the exterior though it looks as good as chrome.

Thankyou for your time.... ive just acquired a standard c70T5 and looking for a bit extra power without braking the bank. am i right in thinking its running a 16t turbo as it it is, if so what kinda of horsepower is achievable without changing the turbo, and what mods would be advisable? thankyou

    About 280-ish with the 16t.

First up though give it a good stage-0 and assess things as they stand before gunning for more horses
