Not had much to update on until today. My new ATP housing for the GTX arrive so I did some side by side shots. The new housing is more compact and I think the main benefit will be in allowing a wider radius on the 1st part of the downpipe. THe exit is much higher up relative to the central axis. The T3 mounting plate will also make the core higher relative to the engine/ exhaust manifold.

Call me daft but do you not think it would be worth machining/polishing the inside to the collector to remove the casting?
I am also thinking of having the housing treated with the plasma coating.

Polishing it will make it more prone to cracking, remember to use good quality studs and nuts.

The holes are the same size as the exhaust manifold for a Volvo - so I plan to get some genuine studs and the locking nuts (the copper flashed ones). M8 IIRC?? right?

It has to be bored yet. Shem is working up the TTV SMF and a replacement clutch plate - get it all nicely balanced.

I ordered some proper ARP studs for the housing but because of their design and thickness of the collector flange - they are not quite long enough - so I have reverted to using old Volvo ones which are the perfect length and new copper flashed nuts. I can't see it coming away.

I've ported the new collector and the turbine housing entry (as far as I could get with the dremel).

Getting the old housing off was difficult, but I managed to separate it without bending any fins.

Orientation should be a bit more flexible as I planned to get the sump tapped, and use flexible oil pipe for the return.

I have had to chop the old actuator mounting bracket as the angle to the W/G arm was much greater than before.

Needs a bit more finessing and then hopefully find someone (Colin!?) to tack it for me.

I guess I can't really finalise the orientation of the CHRA until the block and head are re-united -but I am fairly sure it is not too far off the mark. The project feels like I have a slow but steady momentum. I am waiting on the WMI tank for the boot. The new block will be bored out soon and new piston rings fitted onto the wiseco pistons. Shem says it all looks pretty good.

Once that is ready with the new shells and bottom end then I can finally start to move towards re-assembly. And this time I am doing it then I know it will be right (or my fault).

My next door neighbour has helped me out with the bracket and welded it up. Probably not the most exciting update ever but still good progress. And thanks to Pete for offering to do the welding.

    Trials and Tribulations

It's amazing how I have stuck steadfast to this dream because many would have thrown in the towel by now.

New donor block had to be scrapped because there was a compromising crack in the crank ladder, just adjacent to the oil pump recess - so I have a 600 quid closed deck that had to be redone with another block.

I will either turn it into a coffee table or sell it on as a going concern. The deck is sound, but I wasnt prepared to compromise. FFS I didn't even spot it. So setting the heartache aside the mark 2 block will be ready hopefully this weekend.

So while the bottom end works were going on I've been doing some polishing work - some cosmetic, some with an engineering purpose.

Saw the shiny stuff on Facebook Dave, was meaning to ask... Have you put anything on the polished surfaces to stop them dulling over time?
