That's just the thing. The very same clamp & v-band have been working perfectly all the way through last year until just now - & the only evidence of blow-by was on the clamp. The only changes made since the dyno run was the powerflex hangers (because I've been trying to iron out the clunking noises), which were not a perfect fit. I couldn't see any issues with the mating faces on the v-band other than the soot from the blow by. I just hope the new clamp will sort it out.

If you can check the flanges havnt distorted. They shouldnt of but its possible if the clamp wasnt tight. Stainless is a bitch for distorting unlike carbon steels

If you have feeler gauges butt the two of them together hand tight and check for gaps.

I've decided to get a SS v-band gasket too - sadly had to import them from the states.

My new v-band clamp arrived from Blackpool via e-bay. Bolt was thinner than the old one but I am not sure that will make too much difference. I got the old clamp off and there was soot on the shaft of the bolt. This is just one part of the circle not covered by the clamp. Hope this old photo shows what I am on about.

I reverted the hangers back to the original rubber ones for now. Exhaust still touches the rear ARB.

I will try & find some better fitting powerflex ones.

I cleaned off the exhaust putty from last week as best I could given the difficult access. the mating surfaces did not appear to show any gaps. I bought & now appear to have lost the feeler gauge - but as I said could only see soot in one spot.

I applied a new bead of putty & tightened it to 40NM (as much as i dare) & will leave it to set till tomorrow.

I hope it's sorted mate, but it doesn't really matter if you can't try it out on the strip.

I put the new clamp on - with exhaust putty. It was better but it still blows. Will have to wait till next week to see if my last hope the v-band gasket. I will probably take the downpipe off completely & clean it up. Luckily it can be split off the cat, as it has a 3 bolt flange, just before the cat.

There was still soot showing on the old clamp. I am convinced it has to be that interface. Its so irritating because until 2 weeks ago it was perfect. GRRRR!

If it isn't the vband, other possibilities include any of the other sealing flanges with the exhaust housing. Mine were welded up, so manifold to exhaust housing and exhaust housing to internal wastegate. Never had an issue with the vband though. Are you buying ATP versions? Are the clamps and flanges stainless versions?
