Just what you need before Christmas!!!

    Hi all,
I have a Volvo XC90 D5 with manual gearbox, that has been diagnosed as having a leaking clutch slave cylinder in the bell housing. My mechanic said it was ok to wait until after Christmas, but I found the clutch was juddering sometimes.
However, today I had a loud noise in 3rd and 4th gears, best described as being like the gearbox sound of a car reversing quickly. The other gears are fine.
Is this likely all to be associated with the clutch, or has something more serious developed?
    Many thanks for your thoughts.

Does your pedal feel spongey and are you topping up the hydraulic fluid at all?

Siamblue, the pedal isn't spongy but I have been topping up the fluid - that was put down to the leaking slave cylinder. (Nice looking Akita by the way!)
Gouldy, that was my fear! I was hoping someone would think otherwise...

I have the same leak on mine but have no issues except having to top the fluid up every now and again, but i have been warned that its no five minute fix and is going to cost a few quid.Hope yours is nothing more serious!!

Yeah, the concentric slave cylinder is on the input shaft inside the bell housing, apparently it was designed like that to reduce clutch judder (or something like that) by removing the release lever on the older models (there is even a Volvo retrofit kit available for the older gearboxes!).

But like T5ER says, to replace it is a gearbox out job, and the slave cylinder/bearing isn't cheap either. I wonder who's genius idea it was to inegrate the slave cylinder and thrust bearing, utter stupidity.
