Sounds like sticky hydraulic lifters ( tappets ).

Maybe a hydraulic lifter cleaner or some Forte worked for me

marshalls use to use forte engine flushes and fuel treatments when they did service work, i would use a decent 10w40 oil and some slick 50 engine treatment matey

Forte isnt oil, its an additive that cleans tappets, injectors etc etc.

Tappets are cheap individually ( iirc about £3-4 ), but there's a lot of them and it would be the labour costs to change them.

Then if you were only changing one you'd have to find the little blighter which could prove difficult.

That forte stuff goes in the tank and works with the fuel, try using the forte engine flush then change the oil and filter. We do it on most services in our dealership and it works great.

    tapping v70

thanks for the info. could you tell me how much fortis oil i would put in the petrol tank and how long do i leave the fushing oil in for? i was just wondering ,the tapping gets louder when the engine start to warm up why is that? i would have thought it would be the other way round, that is tapping when cold and then quiter when the engine starts to warm up and how does putting foutis oil in the petrol help free the lifters. sorry to be a pain but i do appirsieate your help.
