    Unhappy Sleepless night me thinks

Went up to Adams ( Readview ) today as i have a very annoying knocking noise from the front of the car

Ive replaced the Wishbones and the droplinks and its still there, it sounds quite a metallic knocking as well!

Anywho, Adam had a quick test drive in it, down a cobbled street

Apparently it has more rattles than Mothercare

He couldnt put a certain cause on it and said it needs to go up on the lift, tomorrow, hopefully its not something major, fingers crossed

Went up to Adams today, so far it needs an inner track rod and boot, rocker cover gasket as theres a leak from either side at the back it also needs 2 front top mounts ( changing the whole legs ) theres a leak from where the O/S drive shaft goes into the gearbox, it needs 4 new tyres, 1 on the front is very close to the limit.

The track rod and boot is being done tomorrow, the rocker gasket when i have the money And the tyres in a couple of weeks, hopefully it'll be sorted then

Trust Adam with my car anytime, he's got a quality team of lads up there, Oh and my loan car is a wee belter, well the engine is anyway, 440 1.9td

The money ive spent on that car i could have had a nice V70R but hey ho, life goes on and hopefully it wont need anything else done for a bit.

All in all im pretty relieved that its nothing really major.

Big thanks to Adam and Paul @ Readview.

Faultless service once again, and a very good vpc discount price

Booked in again for some more work in a couple of weeks.

    Id always highly reccomend Readview.

you could do the rocker cover gasket your self do it with your eyes shut. Have you checked out the arb bushes as these often look ok when the car is loaded or unloaded but it will still make a right noise.
It's mint spent a fortune love it but I can't afford to buy the oil field to go with car!!

There isn't a rocker cover gasket on these engines I'm afraid to say. The 'cover' is actually the upper camshaft bearing carrier and is sealed with a special sealant (available from Volvo or Loctite do a version of it do not be tempted to use silicon sealant) and removing it will mean the cams will obviously not be held down unless you use a special tool to support them. Also take care when disturbing any of the suspension as if you split the hub carriers from the front struts you will loose the camber setting and will have to have it reset by a body shop or alignment type place.

I didn't know that surely there is a way of holding down the cams with out the tool or is it litrally you lift the rocker of and the cams jump right out of where they sit so you cant get the rocker back down or is it the timing can slip?

Found this on a swedish car forum in the states Banana mnas spot its a right mission to do rocker cover leak.

Agreed. Check on Volvospeed, or Matthews Volvo Site for a walkthrough. Basically, you have to lock the cams to the cam cover since they will come out with the cover, remove all 22 thousand bolts, break the seal on cam cover and head, and lift the cams and the cover off. It's a huge pain. Then, you have to carefully scrape all gasket material off boths mating edges(cam cover and head). I like to use utility knife blades then finish off with a light clean up with a honing stone. Try to keep as much of the gunk out of the head and off of the cam followers, etc. DO NOT dent the mating surfaces or the cam journals!!! The mating surfaces MUST be completely oil free. Use a roller or a foam paint brush to spread a thin layer of the gasket on both mating surfaces, be carefull not to spread it too thick as it can dry and clog oil passages. Replace your o-rings and then put the cam cover and cams back on the head. Start from the center and work your way out in all directions with the bolt. I think the torque specs are 12ft lbs, but don't quote me on that, it's been awhile for me.

The special tool is also needed because if you try to refit the cam cover just by winding in the 10mm head bolts you end up stripping the thread and then require retapping of the holes. We did tell Cameron that it is volvo's gasket compound that is used,i think he is just using "gasket" as a general phrase in this case

What Adam said He did tell me it was a liquid sealant

Theres no way i 'd even think about trying to do that myself, " £40 a squeeze " and a ££££ed engine, no thank you

Remember the first time i tried to change a wishbone, ( which i can do now easily by the way and properly ) didnt push the ball joint far enough up into the hub and the ball joint fell out on a sharp right bend

So there is absolutely no way id even attempt to take the engine to pieces, especially as it would be the first time i'd tried it.

Adam and Paul are the men for the job
