Barometric Sensor Fault

last week as i was going over a pretty high speed bump my ecu light came on, volvo said it was the barometric sensor. they reset the codes and cleaned the sensor and sent me on my way - they only charged me £60 too!!!

but today as i was going over another high speed bump the ecu light came back on and i'm thinking its the sensor again. volvo want £125 to supply and fit the sensor but considering its a very straight forward job i'm going to fit it myself at £100.

but what i need to know is will the ecu light go off on its own when it detects the new sensor or will i have to pay volvo more money to clear the error codes???

because if the light does stay on i'll probably get volvo to do the repair as it'll probably work out cheaper.

I take it you mean the lambda light? orange square with a green lambda sign in it....bottom right of the instrument panel?

Im not sure what they are on about with a barometric sensor???? never heard of these? (a barometer measures air pressure)

I wil hazard a guess that they mean the lambda sensor.....between £80 and £130 for the part.

What ever the sensor, you will need the codes re set. Going to the dealer is not the only option as you are paying £80 an hour labour rates.....there or there abouts. Find a specialist instead....they are cheaper and can do the job just as well.

If it is the lambda sensor at the front, aparently these like to seize up solid so have a look before diving in, it may not end up as straight foward as planned.

yep, your right it is the lambda light but no its not the lambda sensor it is the barometric or altitude sensor.

its found on turbo models and measures how high the car is above sea level so it can adjust the boost levels to compensate.

its found behind the drivers headlamp in front of the ecu box on a bracket attached to the inner wing.

considering the part costs £100 if i fit it myself and my local indy (braydon) wants £25 to clear the codes its probably the same cost in total (£125) for the dealer to supply and fit the part.

so what i really need to know is will the light go off automatically when i fit the new sensor or will i 100% have to get the codes cleared?

Mine was given to me by Lea valley motors off a Astra disel turbo he said "i could just take it as he didn't have one in stock" for the T5,
It was exactly the same as the Volvo one except the plug was different so i soldered it on,
Light went off straight away.

gary, so you didn't have to get the codes cleared???

i'm going to replace mine tomorrow and i don't want to pay barkingside £40 to spend 30 secsonds clearing the codes!!!

hi if that is braydon in Stoke Newington they only charged me £10.00 to read my code fault and clear it, it was the hand held unit though.

I drove over a massive Fu*k Off pot hole on Monday and ever since then my Lambda lights been on too ? Is this a wind up ? Barometric sensors ? WTF?
Give me my old Mk1 Escort anyday! So what does any one suggest ? Get the codes read ? I think i'll sue Leeds City council for the cost actually, i',m damn lucky the wheel never even bent.

My light went out straight away as it was in limphome mode,Not sure if the codes reset or not,But if they do store then why did the light go out,
Why are you going to Barkingside? Get your car over to Braydons far better and a lot cheaper too, Plus they stock secondhand parts.

guess what!!!

i thought as a last resort i'd give warrantydirect a ring and seeing as though i've got a gold policy with them they have agreed to pay for the replacement sensor.

at first i dismissed giving them a ring completely because the sensor is not explicity mentioned on there "items covered" list but speaking to the bloke at warrantydirect on the phone he said that they cover most fuel injection system related sensors.

so its off to the garage on monday to have the sensor fitted for FREE!!!

great end to a crappy week.

ps. gary, i'm half way down goodmayes lane opposite the school, i was at goodwin's a few weeks ago and your car was out side the house but seeing as though it was pretty early (8.30am) i was worried i might be waking you up.

maybe next time.

Down Goodmayes lane? Wouldn't be a silver S70R by any chance seen one parked up in a drive about 6 months ago.
There's a nice 850 T5 in Stanley Rd with Volans mint too.

thanks i'll be careful round there from now on but anyway i always stick to the speed limit officer.

i was at goodwin to get a puncture sorted wish i never though, they said they couldn't do it because the alloy was bent. it wasn't the wheel but a dodgey side wall on the tyre. it was portland tyres further up green lane who sorted it in the end, good guys give them a go next time.

i've got 225/35's on mine and the rides not too bad, just got to be carefull near kerb as even low ones will damage the alloy!!!

yep, thats right the silver s70r it is. i've not seen the volanised 850 about but i have seen a white p1 v70 estate with pegs about in the area. i saw him forced into ramming it onto the kerb out side blockbuster on goodmayes road last week it must of damaged the alloy seeing as the kerbs are about 1/2 foot tall there!!! i felt like crying never mind how he must of felt.
