    Turbo questions

How does the turbo on our cars work. Is it always working and gradually increasing as the revs increase, or does it only start from, say 2000 revs.

If you do not have a boost gauge, then how do you know what boost pressure the turbo is working at

a turbo is basically 2 fans connected together by a shaft, one fan is in the exhaust & the other in the air intake. As the exhaust gases leave the engine they turn the first fan, as this is connected to the fan in the intake pipe it pressurises & forces the air into the intake. When the rpm are low the engine isn't making enough exhaust gases to turn the exhaust fan so the turbo isn't making any power (infact its actually a restriction). The bigger the fans in the turbo the more rpm it takes to spin in so the higher up the rpm range before it comes onto boost creating power

so basically the anwer to your question is, it won't start making power till the revs are enough to spin the turbo

You can't see it in an x70 but normal boost pressure is 0,7 bar of boost. That's for the HPT cars
