SnakePliskin Ex Police Interceptor V70 T5

Well everyone i bought this car 3 weeks ago off of ebay and the listing basically said...........

    Volvo T5 V70 1998 "R"
    190k
MOT April 2010, TAX Oct 2009
Spares or Repair due to noisey camshaft. The car is also pressurising from the header tank. Could be an easy fix but due to this i havent risked driving it long distance.

    £500 Buy it Now

Well i went down to pick the car up after paying the full £500 asking for it. When we started it up she sounded lovely apart from the noisey camshaft. I then decided to risk it home which was 72 miles. I got 12 miles into the journey and the oil warning light came on. Then at 18 miles it happened BANG BANG RATTLE RATTLE!!!! Bigend bearing went!!

So i then got her trailored home as i still knew this car was an absolute steal for £500. I stripped the head down to find someone had taken the rocker cover off before but didnt release the cambelt which in turn snapped the cam seats at the pully end. This would have been the cam noise but the bottom end was due to a distinct lack of servicing. I decided to then replace the engine and purchased one off of a Volvo Breakers for £369 delivered to my door.
I fitted this engine on Sunday and she started first turn of the key, i was amazed seeing i dont know hardly anything about Volvos! They say the best way to learn is to do it yourself!!!
I renewed the RMS and cleaned the PCV, new oil and filter, air filter, plugs, leads, cambelt kit, auxillary belt gaskets etc!

So heres the pics of my ride and the process i took in putting the engine into the car!!

Looks like you got yourself a bargain, even with the outlay for the new engine it's still a cheap car.

Looking pretty good mate, certainly better than that dent on top of the piston (yikes!).

Glad it's running well, I take it you're an experienced mechanic then? an engine swap isn't something one does lightly.

Nice one mate. I always love a good engine swap story.

And nice one for giving it a go, its not too hard really, there are probably far worse cars than Volvos to change an engine on. I've had mine out twice now to replace the clutch (one clutch only lasted a year).

LOL, you did it the hard way, after my first clutch change (nightmare) I found it easier to drop the complete subframe and engine, and lift the car off it......

Assuming you are not part of the emergency services; do try not getting caught on the open road with them going as you will have to grab your ankles, assume the position and the car will suddenly become a very expensive purchace.

Indeed. The penalty for impersonating a police officer is relatively stiff, as in you'll get 'shafted'.

You think that's bad, you should have a look under the bonnet of a mid-80s Audi 200 turbo. It's a freakin' maze, and a bit tight too!
