    Angry Another small rant - cost of spares from Volvo

    Whilst I'm in a bad mood after the siren module and the extortion over replacing the battery in that thing.

    Cruise control went belly up. Traced to brake pedal position sensor (iirc). One small plastic cylinder with(presumably) a sliding potentiometer or similar (see piccy).

    To you sir, £85. And only ATE make them, no alternative but to go to bigV and get shafted again. Go to a scrappy, yeh ok that's an alternative but how long will a second hand one last. And I know Rufe can get a good discount but even then the prices are still steep for such relatively small bits.

    Jeez.

    I need a drink...............

    my cruise control has never worked either & a few people have suggested the clutch switch, with costs like that is the exact reason i'm not buying anything until i get the codes read & the fault confirmed

    the prices for parts for the older (850's) cars seems to be getting more reasonable, the joys of owner a modern car

    Are you sure it's a potentiometer ? There are various other methods of sensing position which are more reliable. Have you hacksawed this one yet to see ?

    Still to got to hack it open to satisfy my curiosity at what makes this soooo (relatively?) expensive. It just feels like a cheap and nasty, poorly sprung slider.

    i got one of these from Salvo last year from a newer model than mine, its been absolutely fine. Cured the cruise problem, £11

    Fair enough. There's a lot to be said for cruise control. My S70 doesn't have it and I miss it from the days of my Saabs.

    When I used to travel between my flat here and my house in Scotland I used to drive overnight and just sit back and steer. Lovely!

    They are lovely, well, they were lovely. I'm not so sure that they're quite the same quality as they were when the 900 and the 9000 were in production. Man those cars were good, rock hard build quality and superb reliability. I tuned a 2.0 Eco to 274bhp but I left the Eco badge on the boot. Wringing horsepower out of the Saab engines was so easy.

    Yeah, nothing other than a 9000 with the High Pressure Turbo would do for me, and it would have to be an out and out minter. The older 900 T16's were quite fast too, but not as keen on the styling of the 900's.

    Just before it sold it was up for £2995, my guess is it would have gone for about £2500. No idea why it's still on that site shown at £4995...

    Just to add to this hijack - are Saabs all they're cracked up to be? What about the current 9-3 Aero - isn't that too much of a Vectra?

    Wifey likes 'em but I'm not that fussed.

    I don't think they're as good as they used to be. Yes, the Vectra and 9-3 share a floorpan, but in the same way as a Golf and an Audi A3 do; i.e. completely different. I know that the later Saabs were a lot more fragile due to GM cutting corners and production costs (and customer confidence and repeat sales and brand loyalty) but I'm not sure if they've improved recently.

    My guess is they haven't as all cars these days seem to be built to offer two and a half years of semi-decent reliability and then go on to catastrophic component failure on an unprecedented level.

    No idea about the current/next gen Saab's. The 9000 I had was a 1991J, and GM apparently took over Saab in 1989 (I think), but the 9000 was an original Saab design, the last of the 'true' Saabs, and it was awesome, way ahead of it's time IMO.

    I do, it looked lovely but nowhere near £5k worth. I'd happily have another minter too so if I see one I might buy it myself.

    Didn't the 9000 share the same floorpan and some body panels as the Fiat Chroma and the Alpha 164 ?

    I'd have paid £2.5k for it, no question, if it really was as good as it looked.... I was watching it daily to drop to about £3k, but it seems someone else was too!

    It did indeed, however the Croma and the Alpha were hardly as well made and it shows when you look at how moany there are around. I did always like the 164 though, very smart styling.
