I have noticed 'dampness' in the passenger footwell and also a faint coolant smell every once in a while, does this mean the heater matrix is buggered? Can someone please tell me the symptoms of this fault!

Thanked 9 Times in 9 Postsyou might notice a slight 'fishy' smell, if so that'll be the coolant going rancid in the carpet.
coolant loss is the dead give away. steamy windows as water inside car evaporates is also a good sign
you could do a temporary bodge by isolating the heater matrix while the weather is nice by bypassing the matrix altogether while you source another..
