But this is for rear seat passengers! (kids). If I did that, I'd be torn between sitting in the back watching movies and sitting in the front driving!

For headrests you can get something like this: http://www.cartft.com/catalog/il/643
(you would need to get one that matches the monitor).
You cut a hole in the headrest, gouge out some stuffing and fit it in. You may want to get a spare headrest to try it out on.
It isn't easy to get a perfect job but it is not rocket science.

Have a look at linitx.com too as they are very good.

working on volvos for 4 years. the problem retrofitting screens in standard headrest is the fact the the 2 metal bars go right through the head rest so fitting a screen is near on impossible. thats why volvo sold there own kits with special headrests.

Hmm, yeah I'd heard that, but I have seen them done! Fraz had them in his old S70.

I think the wiring would be the pain...

Sorted. I fabricated a bracket to hold the screen unit that spans the roof lining and is mounted between the front bolts of the rear grab handles. Difficult to explain, but it looks neat, if a little industrial.

The best thing is that it is completely passive. The whole installation can be removed with no trace that anything was ever there. Power and stuff runs via a single multicore cable from the rear of the car, and the cable is routed around the door rubbers etc and across to the screen, all hidden by the cars trim and the bracket itself.

Audio goes via an inbuilt FM transmitter to the cars stereo, which is surprisingly good and far more than adequate for kids movies etc.

All in all, I'm very pleased with the results.

The one I had in the V70 was mounted without the bar. Probably some MDF bonded to the roof under the headlining.

Be warned - a screen in this position will block the rear view which can be annoying.

Actually it doesn't on the V70. It's in the higher part of the roof which would ordinarily be occupied by a sunroof mechanism (mine has no sunroof) so even when it's lowered, I still have a full clear view of through the rear window.

It's only an 8" screen, and it probably looks bigger than it actually is.

Things still to do (for my own personal perfection) are to remake the bracket so that it fits much more closely to the inner profile of the roof lining, and then to paint it to more closely match the colour. But even as it is it's been worth it's weight in gold. The extra rear lights are useful for kiddie loading/unloading too.

[Edit] And of course after undoing two bolts and disconnecting one multicore cable (with four connected wires in the boot) it can be removed, with no trace.

Look on Ebay for velour in beige, should be cheap & if you use spray mount & wrap the bar hiding the seem on top it should look absolutely mint!

I might have tried to mount the screen into the bar (cross section the bar keeping the top panel) to sink it flat to the roof.

Yeah, I considered that and tried it, but with this screen unit it would have meant the bracket would be too far down from the roof, unless the profile of the bracket matched the roof lining perfectly. It also would not have been rigid enough to hold the screen unit securely. In addition, that location on the roof lining isn't flat, so even if it was closer to the roof the base of the unit would required some trimming to make it sit flush. As it is, I've use a very small amount of matching foam packing to close the small gaps either side.

The current bracket was made by hand and eye - i.e. no proper measuring up as such, just place the metal in the roof, trim/bend/cut, and repeat until it was close enough for a prototype.

Next time I'll make a good profile out of some stiff cardboard or something and then use that as a template for bracket mk.2.

I will look for some beige velour - that might just be the icing on the cake for bracket mk.2, thanks.
