    Question Roof mounted flip-down screens...

...does anyone know how they attach to the roof ? There seem to be loads of them available, but none tell you how they're mounted. Some special fixings for the head-lining perhaps ?

you can either pull the roof lining down & downwards so the screws are facing downwards, or you can screw upwards if you know there is a reinforcement the other side of the lining

Cheers. So they're typically screw mounted then ? No special fittings ?

Right'O. I'm wondering what's behind the roof lining for screws to screw into though....

    Thanks

A lot of these screens come with a metal plate that you put into the head lining, then screw into that. Best talk to a specialist about how they do it perhaps?

Had a feel around in the head lining this lunchtime - can't feel any beams running across the roof though...

Will try again later, this time a more thorough inspection.

Do note that if you fit one in the middle you cant see out the rear view when it is down. Gets annoying quickly.

Thanks Baj, thought of that, but as I'd most likely be towing the caravan it wouldn't matter...

Sometimes they bond a piece of wood to the roof metal and then screw to that. I have had it done on a couple cars in the past, better than just screwing to the headlining from otherside as some cars have a vert flisy roof lining and you can just pull the screen and it damages the roof lining. Best talk to a specialist as they can normally fit a screen in a couple of hours!!

Would you not be better putting them in the rear of the headrests?.

I did consider a headrest mounted system. Downsides are mainly cost. I would want the proper Volvo headrests, and they aren't cheap. You can get replacement headrests of course, but they look crap/cheap tac.

I'm sure any decent auto retrimmer would be able to fit some LCD's into your headrests.

Yeah - had not really considered that option. I'll investigate a bit. Cheers.

On my P2, there's a cover just about level with my headrest which I'm told is a fitting from the sunroof option?

I'll try & get some pics, but it pops off & there's a beam! I can do a measure up for you including the depth (so you have no screws popping out the roof!) to get you the best fitting.

    Would that help much Chris?

I've had a further look at this since my original post, and I can see a beam just in front of the alarm sensor in the middle of the roof when I take out the sensor and have a close look/feel inside the roof lining. It's probably the same beam you are referring to badger.

There doesn't seem to be another beam aft of the alarm sensor for a good foot or more. So, the front one will be too far foward and the rear one too far back!

It's obviously not an option to fit a screen over the alarm sensor!

However, I do have another idea which requires further investigation, I'll report on whether it will be feasible later...
