    C70 Steering "Wobbliness"!

Just put my C70 through its MOT. One garage failed it saying there was excessive play in the steering rack and that you could shake it by hand when it was on the ramp, another garage (independent volvo specialist) tightened some nuts and it went through its MOT.

This is playing on my mind, a Volvo main dealer told us about 18 months ago that it needed a new steering rack, but the independent volvo specialist said they were talking rubbish and that its fine.

Thing is, the tracking always seems out (just been tracked by a garage), despite replacing track rod ends and arms and the steering feels very wobbly and unstable when going over bumps and dips in the road, feels fine on smooth, straight roads.

Anyone got any ideas on this, I don;t want to replace the steering rackunless its necessary but everyone is telling me conflicting things.

Check the four wheel tracking, some garages miss it and just do the fronts. Also what tyres do you have? 17s and above do tend to tramline a little. What mileage has your car got? The racks are known to wear out albeit only at higher mileages (mine has 173,000 on the clock and is only just starting to wear).

I'm currently on standard 16" wheels with 50 profile tyres, its done 98,000 miles.

Have got some 17"'s coming and will put 225/45's on. Will get it 4 weheel tracked like you suggest, it just feels so slack and wobbly am worried that something is seriously wrong!

Standard wheels should feel just fine. I wouldn't worry too much as nothing should fall off. You could book it in with another knowledgeable independent for a glance over and a second opinion to be on the safe side.

When an independent garage "tightened some nuts", what exactly did they tighten?

They said they tightened the bolts on the mounting bracket for the steering rack
