Which petrol engine

Looking possibly at a S/V 40 for my daily work horse, as a cheaper alternative to the V70R. Trawling through tinternet have notice 1.6, 1.8 & 2.0 petrol engines.

Which would be the best allrounder for a 60 mile a day motorway journey, taking into consideration mpg and also road tax bands.

Would the diesel be better. Average annual mileage 12,000

The 1.6 is underpowered; the 1.8 is usually a Mitsubishi GDI engine that will get carboned up, which leaves the 2.0. There's only about 4mpg between all the petrol engines (1.6 is 36mpg, T4 is 30mpg) according to Parkers (who are always optimistic).

If you're after economy, then diesel is the no-brainer option. I don't like diesels personally, but plenty of people do...

my dinosaur v40 (see sig pic) does a canny good 47mpg (heavy footed). If you do go for a diesel be sure to get the 115bhp Sport as the rest are flat by comparison imo!

2.0T is thirstier than the T4.

If you are on the motorway on a 60 mile trip then the T5 should easily get 28mpg, so not really much less than a V40 doing mid 30 mpg. I have often tried to work out if getting a more economical car is really worth it? I could buy a newer car tommorow if i wanted but i like the T5, its never let me down or gone wrong once, its comfortable, effortless, loads of space for family and fast.

For example

My T5 Does easily @28 mpg average on a run

V40 (petrol) Does @ 37 mpg average on a run

If petrol is £1 a litre or £4.50 per gallon then to do 60 miles per day for 5 days = 300 miles per week at £4.50 per gallon.

So T5 will cost for 300 miles per week @ 28 mpg = 10.7 gallons X £4.50 per gallon = £48 per week

V40 will cost for 300 miles per week @ 37 mpg = 8.1 gallons X £4.50 per gallon = £36 per week

So £12 per week saving for 300 miles.



Or over 12000 miles per year average you will save £468 with a pertol V40. So if you average it out it costs about £1.20 more in fuel per day to drive a T5!

Which has got to be worth it, its a no brainer for me, it has to be a T5!!!!!!!

I use to have a 2001 V40 1.8 sport and loved it no probs with the engine but have since changed to a 2003 V40 1.9D sport its probably slightly slower not much though but has plenty of torque, my boss has just remaped his one and says it like a whole new car so will have to have a go of it yet. I get 45mpg from my one and thats a 90 mile round trip 5 days a week sitting at 60 65mph.
