    780

I've been looking into trying to buy a 780 for some time. I have learned that they wer never sold in britain (well Ireland anyway), I've lso been told that they never made them in right hand drive. Is any of this true? Has anyone ever drove one? If so what are they like and whats the best model? Does anyon now how much expense I'd go to in getting one?

Its just the V70 2.5 10 valve SE, pictured here with the 2 people that make life worth living, my babies.

Have a look on Wikipedia matey, should find what you want to know on there. Quite certain they were intended for the US market and to the best of my knowledge were all powered by the 2849cc PRV unit and not sure but think they all had slush boxes.HTH

says they were sold in Europe, i thought 780 was referring to home made V8 700's

    The mighty 780

Seeing the response this thread on a Volvo 780 it perhaps is good to give a brief history of this car.

The 780 was introduced in 1985 in Geneva and first registrated/for sale in 1986. Last car was build in 1991. They were never sold to the UK.

The car was delivered with the following engines:
    Straight six diesel--D24Tic
    V6 B280 E
    V6 B280 F
    Four cyl. B200 ET
    Four cyl. B230 FT
    Four cyl. B204 GT/FT

The Volvo 780 was in the last years delivered with the IRS(suspension) multilink axle which improved handling quite a bit. Also in 1991 a small amount of cars was sold as a ''limited edition'' with the signature of Bertone on the dash. Very 'limited'' because nothing was added to the car. There was not much to add because all the extra's were already standard in the car

    Chassisnumbers/produktion:

    From sept 1985 til sept 1986 -----683--chassisnr.--1 - 1199
    From sept 1986 til sept 1987--- 2.035--chassisnr.--1200 - 3299
    From sept 1987 til sept 1988 ---2.334--chassisnr.--3300 - 6499
From sept 1988B til dec 1988B
    (B only in Sweden) unkown 1988B .... - ....
    From sept 1988 til sept 1989--- 2.334--chassisnr.--6500 - 8999
    From sept 1989 til sept 1990--- 1.300--chassisnr.--9000 - 11299
    From sept 1990 til . . . . .............400--chassisnr.--11300 -
    Total number produced: 9.086

    Engine type's and made
    B280F (V6) 3.896....
    B230FT (Turbo 8 Valve) 2.958....
    D24 Tic 1.081....
    B280E (V6) 610....
    B204GT 16V Tic 165....
    B200ET Turbo 8 Valve) 371....
    unknown Type "67"? 5....

Numbers of Volvo780 officialy exported to:

    USA-------- 5.669
    Italy-------- 1.384
    Sweden------- 515
    Japan---------416
    Canada------- 346
    France-------- 230
    Div. 138
    Belgium------- 122
    Switzerland---- 79
    Netherlands---- 46
    Spain---------- 43
    Austria-------- 34
    Portugal------- 22
    Norway-------- 14
    Denmark------- 13
    Finland-------- 10
    Thailand-------- 5
    Germany-------- 0
    Great Brittain--- 0

Although these numbers are used in several Volvo bertone/780 clubs etc. there always is some doubt about the exact figures. But I think all in all this is a helpful overview en will 'kill' some further speculations on for instants the typ(s) of engines Volvo used.

Thanks guys, I want something different but with a Volvo badge on the nose and I spied these on the internet and havent been able to get much info. It could end up costing an absolute fortune so maybe in a few year. I had a 740 and it was an amazing car and as its the same car I thought, perfect!!! Japanesse would probably be the best bet if I could find one being rhd. Thre is also the prospect of a 960 Royal but these seem even harder to come buy. Spied a Royal for sale on the web a year ago but the seller was in Australia and the carriage would have cost the same as the car.

    Rhd

A RHD 780 was never made. A good 780 is not so easy to find but it is still possible.
Problem with the car is not the technical maintenance (it's just all Volvo) but the parts that were made by Bertone...they cost a lot. The handmade interior for example and of course also the exterior. Almost nothing from a normal 700-series will fit, not even a bumpercover.

Lovely looker the 780, but personally I'd try and find a 262C. They are super rare and still look so lovely, sadly though most of them rotted underneath the vinyl roof which in most cases spelled the end of their life.

You may find a 780 in Europe and be able to import it.
