Why move the horns?
Ive done it now
They look awful stuck behind the grille and now there should be more fresh air to get through to the rad

Suppose the throughflow makes sense. Seems like a nuisance job for little gain though. Thanks for clearing that up.
Not really a nuisance job pretty easy actually, if you like lying on the floor trying to squeeze under an R front bumper on a lowered car
Only took me 5 minutes and now the grille area looks a bit better and hopefully the airflow will be better, as they arent exactly the smallest horns about

Not the answer you were looking for but consider this. Not for everyone, I will admit, but a Stebel Nautilus will bolt in as a replacement to the offside horn bracket mounting point and you can mount the relay in the void behind the centre post of the plastic radiator cowling and neatly conceal fused wiring to supply - the job takes about an hour with a suitable nut and bolt, crimping tool and an assortment of 17 amp wiring and crimp connectors. The Nautilus is a compact compressor twin airhorn and is VERY loud (but legal) and only about £20 on Ebay. It is important to get the latest version of the horn, the older one does not fit in this location without mods. Retain the original Volvo low tone nearside horn and you get a lovely three tone chord - admittedly more Italian than Nordic but it certainly does the trick. Makes you want to drive through tunnels just to hear it! I would think any increase in airflow is SO marginal with any horn modification, that if cooling is an issue the problem may be elsewhere, a flush or theromostat or even hoovering the matrix should be considered first. Unless at standstill there is one heck of a ram effect through the grille, that this should be plenty enough for the northern European climate. Fans tend to run only at low speed and standstill - evidencing my thinking. Make of it what you will. And may all your Volvos be horny!

from what ive heard the horns obstruct around 10-15% airflow in particular to the intercooler. as small a percentage some may think,.. if there is a free gain to be had why not,.. like tesco.. everylittle helps

moved my just now, took all of 10 mins, and 5 mins of that was trying to squeeze under a R front bumper!looks so much better
Did mine today while the sun shone.......well pleased
wont they get full of water when it rains from under car splash and fill up and sound like a drowned dog???? i know mine did when i did it to mine on old car years back lol....!!!!
No, but I tell you, they are brilliant for the price and these compact units (they are really dinky) are a darn sight better than the old Stebel twin horn systems. At risk of sounding like a Volvo owner (!) I think if you are going to have a horn, you need one that fulfils it's purpose: the louder and brighter the better so that everyone can hear you coming. Frankly, the Volvo original equipment is feeble - or in less technical terms, sounds like a fart in a force nine. My new horn is the force nine (but as I say, I retain the old Volvo low tone to maintain the fart effect within) ; - )
