    Question Dont Say Head Gasket???

getting excess pressure in expansion tank, hose running from radiator to block worryingly high with pressure {solid} , tempreture gauge in car reads normal, no mayo on dip stick. gonna get compression test done asap any thoughts could it be a stuck thermostat or air lock or similar???

It will still get hot, it'll just take a long time to warm up.

If the thermo is stuck open then rad will get up to temp but probably only after a while or when sitting in traffic. Also when travelling at speed guage may drop. If stuck closed,I would expect the rad to be cold. Needs some investigating buddy.

I've changed my head gasket. wasn't too hard a job, even cleaned up the turbo and changed the oil return seal at the same time.

Weren't you looking at changing the clutch too? Best thing to do is take the engine out and do it all in one go, as there are some difficult bits to get at down the back of the engine essential to remove the head.

Join the club - I've changed the radiator,expansion-tank cap, thermostat 87c, temperature sensor, & the fan relay.
    None have had any effect.
No water in oil or vice-versa - she puffs steam out the expansion when I stop after a long run - losing about a litre every 100 miles.
    Mileage 155k

Did the head gasket solve it?

I've got a BMW E46 1.9 doing the same- about a litre / 100 miles. Can't find any leaks, alot of pressure, combustion gases in header tank inconclusive, runs 100%, none of the plugs look 'steam cleaned'. No usual signs of HG failure.

    Is really irritating me!

this is exactly what the 5hitroen did 2days after i brought it, had the headgasket done & lasted about 2weeks before exactly the same happened again

unfortunatly i can't help anymore tho becuase i just scrapped the thing as it'd already cost me more to repair the first time than it did to buy it lol

Well.to be fair, they are some of the most comfortable cars to be in. Sadly though they have the same mileage expectancy as my armchair. Made the grave error as a mechanic to move to Peugeot (for that read Citroen and to an extent Renault) and found out how not to build cars. Fine if new and company owned but would never, ever buy one.
