If you have the right setup for suspension and tyres its amazing how much better the car is as for the scientifc guy he may be right but right is not always fun....

Thanks for the encouraging comments guys,

Russ is right about the suspension making a huge difference, I've put Gaz Gold coilovers which I really rate (apart from the front springs being a completely wrong fit... they are making a new set for me) and braces front and rear, quite a few other tricks as well, and there's a slipper in the box too which helps. So roll on a whole lot of fun when she's mapped right!

I spent my evening finding and then desoldering a spare ECU connector so the standalone is getting closer...

Reading these forums is a constant source of interest and sometimes amazement. 591bhp?? The mind boggles.....Have no real idea what mine is making but it is a blast. For the outlay I doubt these cars can be beaten. Every time I drive it,it makes me smile. Just love blowin' these so-called high performance diesels into history. Their facial expressions are priceless!! Long live the T5.........

    Hi Al

Coilovers are the only way if your running a decent amount of power, what diff did you go for ? Sounds like your having lots of fun with your project you should start a thread on it which is always interesting i dread to think how many hours i spent with my autronic loom before i had it sorted

    Good luck

    Hi Alan

The very best thing about The Peril is people are not expecting a boring Volvo to be fast of course a chipped 850 is not a slow car and still is lots of fun

Forgetting engine control systems for a minute and looking at the mechanical site the only 500+ BHP 5 pot Volvo I know of that is putting these sort of figures out on a regular basis is the KPAX S60 T5 AWD car.

Its basic spec is Darton liners, diesel crank and the rest is a Mahle engine build with Cosworth race cams. It also runs Sunoco 104 RON fuel.

What is it with the obsession with numbers and graphs for cars? They are to be driven and not put in labs and annualized. I sure as hell don't have 510BHP I won't even have 507BHP but I do have enough to out run 2 Ring Taxi's on crappy road tyres and off the shelf Koni shocks. Prove it where it counts on road and track not in the lab. Volvo's are built to be driven so drive them!

I think that the "obsession with numbers" that you mention comes during the "building" phase... that comes before the "driving" phase... at least in my case!

And my numbers are crap anyway at the mo

Dunno. Mid 300s for a driveable car, probably. All the T4's I've seen with 400+ seem to go for headline figures but only have a narrow useable powerband.

LOL that's the thing, I'm not trying to prove anything or compete with others, just build a Volvo that's perfect for me (within £££ constraints!)

Hope it's not far off now.

Thats a good point regarding dyno figures, here's a quote from Bob....despite all this testing the cars still overheated on track at first.......

"The motor program has been developed by Mahle US ( NOT MAHLE UK).
The program has been hands on managed by Mark Blaha, who has work very hard to produced a dependable motor. You can't compete for championships without a dependable motor program.
The most amount of developement has been in the wet sleeve liners, they move around under boost and shear head gaskets, leak water into the oil and cause failures. He has developed a sleeve system with Darton that has proven to solve the issue (at least on the Dyno for 59 hours).
The motor is built from a stock Volvo assembly, the are specail rods and pistons, head work, dry sump oil system, headers, turbo modification, etc.
We are currently running a stock intake manifold, but are working on an improved version and have SCCA permission to do so. Lots of work to the cooling system and intercooler so the motor is not a one lap wonder, then heat sinks and looses power.
I tremendous amount of time and developement work has gone into this oproject to not only make a competitive car but a reliable race car much in the Porsche tradition. We hope to make our knowledge available to the street enthusiast with components that really improve the performance for street cars or driver day cars, including a body kit that looks awesome.
But that is all a ways down the road, for now focus, focus, focus on the main goal at hand. We will get some testing in before Sebring, not a lot but enough that we are very pleased"
