    which chip is better?

Hi allz. I've been looking at getting a chip for the car but i'm not sure which one. There is the RICA chips which seem to boost the power very well but then there's SUPERCHIPS which have been around for years. Has anyone got one of these or is there another chips to use.

    1996 850 T5, one mod. just a cone airfilter.

There's quite a few to choose from and I'm not about to start recommending any one chip as it'll only start an argument. However, do your research, they all work slightly differently and have their pro's an cons.

Personaly I have a remap from HLM in bromsgrove, it is a RICA remap in all bar name and is being sold for £150.

I have the HLM 280 Rica on my car, no problems. Big improvement in power and torque from standard. Well happy with it.

lol........ yeah, this thread will no doubt end with a slanging match !!

Use the search function, this debate has probably been done a million times.

I have a HLM '280 ECU upgrade' £150 and significant lump of extra power. I would have gone for MTE but the price difference is just massive (£150 vs £300+) on an old car like an 850 or C70 T5.

I think I prefer the agressive power a manual boost controller gives low down, but the mid-range punch and peace of mind makes the remap worth the extra money in my opinion.

My old 855R had a 'Superchip' when I bought it... not that I'd have known. The bleed valve should have been a giveaway as they are needed in the set up- judging by that fact I'd go with a re-chip or flash that controls everything.

The 'Superchip' was found when I sent the ECU off to be flashed by the then 'TME' supplier, Swecar Tuning (?). He sent it back unflashed as he could only flash the original chip. That's why I went with RICA and the 19T.

Standalone at least....please say it's standalone....then again with a 19T and greens just get Marco to do a custom tune Unless you know how to tune a car yourself of course in which case VEMS is cheaper than the rest and works brilliantly

(Just in case you aint heard of them lol)

This came to me a few days back from a very reputable Volvo specialist in London:

    Morning Giles,

300+ BHP isn’t achievable (on a standard engine and standard turbo) and particularly on cars that are now well over 10 years old. The simple fact is that RICA makes very good software that is safe to run on the Volvo product as they have a lot of experience. We work with RICA and while they are good they are also expensive. I offer this advice with nothing to benefit as our company policy excludes tuning anything over 8 years old so I cannot sell you anything. In all the comparisons we’ve ever conducted comparing RICA to other tuners, our customers have always enjoyed RICA software more specifically for Volvo. My advice is therefore to go with RICA but not expect 300bhp – you won’t get that anywhere. Expect about 285bhp and decent reliability from RICA.

    Hope that helps.

I am a past customer of HLM who conducted the RICA tune on my old ex-police T5.....now I am going back in my civilian 850R auto for hopefully, the 304 upgrade......RICA or HLM anytime.........they win hands down for the volvo's certainly.

I have to say I think that makes complete sense.......... I have never quite understood why some people appear so obsessed with what each different tuner CLAIMS the power figure is when their software is installed.

In a 10 year old T5 can anyone honestly tell the difference between 300bhp and 275bhp when you floor it? I also believe that most off-the-shelf maps can only unlock so much performance, so the main difference is going to be in power delivery.

Performance figures are for the pub, you gotta drive the car to see how it really goes, and my £150 remap never fails to put a smile on my face and leaves many newer more expensive 'prestige' cars standing.
