    Cool Turning into a debacle.

Had my V70 in at Volvo main dealer in Leicester today, only to find that I had to blast off to Cannock for the day, and get back again for 17:30 to collect it before they 'closed'.

I booked it in over a week ago to get the ETM changed. I explained then that if they could liaise with the warrantly people (third party warranty) to cover the costs if possible then I would be grateful - they agreed, and ordered a new ETM in for the job.

They called me today at about 15:30 to tell me that they hadn't changed the ETM as 'no fault codes were in the car'. I explained (again) that I'd had them cleared last week at my local independant, and the codes did indicate an ETM problem (they removed and cleaned the throttle body too, and said that if I had further issues, I should change the ETM). I also explained (again) that I'd already had the Volvo clean and software upgrade some 6 months earlier.

They told me that they couldn't 'just change the ETM' and get the warranty company to pay for it as if they were audited this would show up as 'under hand'. That's fine, I said, just change the ETM and I'll pay for it myself as I was already convinced that was the problem, as was my local independant.

"Sorry" they replied, "we can't change it now as the technicians leave at 16:00, you'll have to book it in...". Wait a minute, I said, I booked it in to have the ETM changed today, you've had the car all f00kin day, what have you done ? "We see no fault codes so we can't change it" they reply.

I asked them if they could see the rough idle problem and variations in idle speed. "No, the car is running fine" they said "although the technician did say it felt very fast". wtf ?

Is it me, or do Volvo main dealers not follow customer instructions ? Or have they had a deaf and blind technician in it (must have been to 'not notice'). Or have they sat with my car in their car park all day and actually done sod all ?

Having only experienced two main dealers, I am tending to agree so far...

The dealer I used to work for was boarded up 12 months ago. . .

Traditionally the service staff ignored the customers while the Neanderthals hit things in the workshop with hammers (or each other if they're bored).

Salesmen wandered about deluding themselves/management or anyone that listened about how much profit/commission they made on the last deal.

Parts staff considered everyone to be a total knob and fought each other not to have to serve on the '****in' counter!'

I went back to Euro Car Parts. It's the only place you can get away with using 'Sir' and 'you knob!' in the same sentence!

Cornclose, that's really frustrating and typical; seems to me that nowadays the customer is always wrong or stupid or a combination of the two; Alot of companies take the attitude that they're doing you a favour...hang on, without punters your company wouldn't exist- whatever happened to customer service?! (Rant over!)

When I go to mine in Southampton I always ask to speak to the mechanics direct as the idiots on the desk don't know what the hell your talking about. I ended up having an argument with one girl after she claimed that Volvo never did two phase's of the V70 even when I was pointing to my car in the car park which was sat next to a phase 1!!!!!

Idiots! The bigger the knot at the top of the tie the bigger the idiot!

It's back to DPA again for the moment. The only hassle I'm having at present is the long lead times to book a car in, and then not knowing where I will be working a week or more in advance is a real pain, and I have had to cancel bookings in the past.

But yes, TMS would be my next choice - thanks.

I don't understand anyone using a Volvo dealer to service their car or for any mechanical work that is not software or warranty related.

In my experience and humble opinion dealer technicians are unable to sort the most basic
of challenges and behave like everything is just too much trouble.

My D5 hasn't seen the inside of a dealership since I was charged half an hours 'diagnosis' to fault code read the car after the gearbox got out of synch with the shifter leaving me stuck on the forecourt at Tesco with no drive. The RAC recovered the car and Stratstone 'checked' it in the workshop. No fault found and a bill for nearly fifty quid. For what?

Rather use independents, they know that their business depends on service, not how many cars ther sell and warranty work.

Was reading this post from 12 months ago, getting very interested in the outcome, then the topic stopped. Was there ever an outcome , has some posts been lost. Must remember that its sometimes not worth reading old posts.

Main dealers don't have mechanics, they have code readers who look at a code and if it's wrong they plug a new part in.

They have no idea how to diagnose a fault if it doesn't show up on their computer. I have a feeling that brains are not something Volvo button pushers are blessed with.
