    Turbo lag...bleugh!!!

    Morning everyone.
I've been competing in an 1/8th mile (201m) sprint in Nancy this weekend. Ran a 10.276 yesterday, which isn't bad for a fully loaded stock, auto '98 T5CD with 143k miles on the clock! Certainly suprised a few people here- the French don"t know about T5 performance (or how to use a longbow hahaha)! As a point of reference the fastest time was set by a modded Escort Cossie 8.76.
What's bugging me is the 1st 50 metres...fecking appalling throttle response/ turbo lag! The last 150m the old beast is flying, terminal speed around 75mph; reckon that would equate to a low 15 1/4 mile; hmmm not so good.
I think this car is capable of a mid 9 second 1/8th mile...I can't afford a remap atm which would obviously be an instant result. What about a dump valve/ K+N air filter? Would that help in getting an improvement off the line? Your suggestions most welcome!
    Cheers

    ,.,

    hi,
dump valve gives no performance bennifits & sports filters dont really make much diffrence, not noticable if everything else is standard, just a nice noise,
you need to get 3 pedals fitted lol

thats good going, always nice to surprise people in a volvo

just gone thru my times & your estimates are bang on. When i ran a 10.247 over the 1/8 got a 15.468 over the 1/4 with a terminal of 92.19mph

I think this car is capable of a mid 9 second 1/8th mile..
my best over the 1/8 is 9.536, 1/4 was 14.557 with a terminal of 99.17mph (i'm planning on smashing that time this year)

you won't get an extra performance with a dump valve, especially in an auto as the throttle doesn't back off between gear changes. I used to run a K&N cone but found the Pipercross cone to free up the revs alot more. For the drag strip i removed the filter altogether & just ran a pipe straight from the grill to the MAF sensor. I'd recommend a MBC (& boost gauge) & a decat to help out

Thanks for all the useful advice...er, 'scuse me being an ignorant person, but, MBC?
I'll have to see whether or not I can get away with a decat here en France.

I actually made the final in my pool today and only just lost due to wheelspin off the line (pissing down most of the day). I beat 2 cars on the way to the final that had trounced me on a dry strip. Fair play to the organisers- they don't stop the racing when it rains and I won a cup for coming second!! Awesome!
The winner of pool A was a 450+bhp scooby which mashed a modded LS1 powered Camaro- serious muscle car! Just proves that a bit of traction control and 4wd makes for a good all weather car.

I'll post up some video links to my You Tube page- my lovely French partner, bless her, videoed all my races and, got soaked and frozen. But she's planning the next sortie already! How good is that?!

    Thanks mate

i take it you are letting the revs build up with foot on brake beforehand? no turbo lag then, just a bit of wheelspin

Tried that, but felt a bit concerned about damaging the torque convertor/ auto trans

Nasty for the autobox, I'd only do that with a manual.

Thanks Bob- glad you enjoyed the vids. It was brilliant, really enjoyeed myself and most of the folks there were really friendly; I say most because there were a couple who appeared to hate losing; even worse to a Volvo!

    Cheers mate,

    Jerry
