    Grinding

Before I lose £45 on getting a diagnostic from a stealership I have a question.

I have a V70 2001 P2 T5. When the traction control kicks in there is a 'grinding noise' from the engine bay.

Is this normal? I find it hard to believe it is. Does anyone else suffer with this problem?

    Cheers

Hi I have a 2001 S60 T5. Mine does this as well. I had got the impression this was normal, although not nice to listen to. Ive heard similar things when driving other makes of cars, so suspect its not uncommon. Mine has STC (not DSTC). If you turn it off does it still make the noise? Might be one way to test. I bought mine in December and tried turning the STC off because I had the same worry, and it seemed to go away while the wheel spin was more obviously. If you hear anything different let me know as I am the opposite of an expert.

Thanks Mark. It was noticeably worse when on ice/snow.

I hope it is normal from a financial point of view but I struggle to believe it would have sounded like this from new.

Yep, switching the STC off cures the noise but get wicked wheelspin instead.

It does seem to have got worse over the last few months. I'm just slightly concerned when it comes to selling-on/trading-in in the future.

I'll let you know how I get on in a few weeks time anyway mate.

You'll probably find it's the Turbo chattering as it spools... and then the STC pulls the rug out from under its power!

Can't say I've ever heard it, but I have DSTC.. it may be inherrent to STC?

I'm sure someone can say for certain!

    hi

i have exactly the same problem had it for months tried finding an answer and i read from forums in america ppl saying the abs/stc motor tends to stop working properly and make this noise
they say the motors are made very cheaply and don't last too long but i have found a place that refubishes them u just send yours to them for 100 quid not done it yet myself not got the money lol
meant to ask when you've braked too much in the snow once the abs kicks in does it make the same noise?
    this link might help explain

Eh, my car nearly did a ski jump off the end of my road in the compacted snow/ice...

Full rattle off the ABS, but no grinding noise, just sliding wheels!

Hate my road at times! Tho it's a dead end & private, so no enforcable speed limits!

    2am = rally time!

It's normal for cars with STC as far as I can gather...

God I hope you're right. Im pretty skint myself. Previous owner of my car mentioned an intermittent fault on the abs modulator. From the posts on here it might be connected to the STC as well. I imagine ABS and STC work together to some degree. Anyone know anything about this modulator?

I think the ABS issue was for Phase 1 models only - anyone correct me if I'm wrong...

Interesting you should say this 'cos to date my local mechanic has changed the abs pump twice for refurbed ones - yet still got the grinding.

After he last looked at it, he did say that the original pump is actually fine and that the next thing he wants to try is the motor.

He's giving me a ring this week to try a new pump motor. If that doesn't work I'll be off the stealership

Cheers mate, I'll let you know how it goes.

I've been told this theory too, but it does seem to have gotten worse over the last few months. Cheers though.
