Question What's Making My T5 Sound Like a Diesel?

    Hi there,

    HELP NEEDED!!!!!

My T5 has been sitting for maybe 6 months, but today I fitted a new battery, checked all the fluids and started it. It fired up straight away, but it was tapping away like a diesel. I left it running for a wee while, but it didn't quieten down. I have it booked into my local dealers for the PCV change tomorrow - am I going to get hit with a bigger bill because there is something seriously wrong with it?

Secondly, were should the standard boost gauge dial sit, when the car is idling? Mine was between quarter and 10 to (as if on a clock), is this right? If not, where should it be, and what would the problem be?

Any advice and knowledge greatly appreciated!

    I don't care if you have a T-5, a T-5R or an R......
......they wouldn't have existed if my Turbo hadn't forged the path!

Boost gauge sounds like its sitting about right when the engine is at idle and off boost in vacuum. As for the ticking tappet noise well if it has been sat for 6 months without being driven then its likely the tappets have bled dry of engine oil especially if it was quiet before when you last used the car. If the oil level is ok and you are happy that engine oil is being supplied to the cylinder head then an engine oil and filter change accompanied by a nice road test should have the tappets quiet in no time.

Sounds like a misfire? My cousin picked up an X reg Fiat Bravo which had been standing for a year as the owner was in Uni so before he picked it up I aranged change the Spark plugs, HT leads, oil, filter, coolent and thermostat. Started first time and perfectly.

cegc70t had an S40 2.0T about 3 years ago, While we were at a volvo meet (of all things) his car started sounding very "tractor".

We were assured it was a plug, but C traded it for his C70!

    Question,

Did it sound ok at about 30mph or when you're in boost?

If so that would be compression ignition & it would confirm a dud or burn plug.

Well, she went in and had the PCV replaced at the price quoted £125 (labour only), and the pads were done too. I was told that I'd need a new tyre and new brake discs all round, well I have a set of Perfos sitting waiting to go on and I am going to have to buy some Mintex discs, as the Volvo ones are just a little too pricey just now.

However (which I shall go into more detail in another thread), I asked them to make me up a set of number plates......when I had returned, they had also fitted them. How? I hear you ask......by drilling holes in the boot, and new holes in the front bumper

The drive back home wasn't too bad, seemed to be boosting ok. I'll get the oil & filter change, new spark plugs and HT leads done next week and see how it feels then.

Put some forte engine treatment in it

It stopped the tapping on mine ( for a while anyway )

Think i have a rogue tappet somewhere that keeps popping its nasty little head up now and again and tapping its balls off for 5 minutes or so
