    So UPSET!!

Driving around in my T5 tonight, smell of oil, big bang, oil light came on followed by every other light on my dash, stopped car oil on floor, had a closer look, small hole in the front of the block, i feel like crying, any sympathy or money would be greatly appreciated!!!

    Crap crap crap.

I'm gutted for you mate. Thats terrible news.

Any ideas what happened yet? I know it's a bit early for you to have had a chance to do anything about looking at it to see what has caused the rod failure. Wasn;t it stronger rods you had fitted? though if its come through the block it sounds more like the conrod bolts have failed rather than the rod itself as that would just bend and drop the compression.

Totally gutted for you mate, I've been tearing my hair out over part failures and niggles while trying to get mine up to spec, but this puts that all in perspective. It's the worst failure to have because you cant rebuild it. However, I always like to upgrade as I repare to try and lessen the blow, so hard as it is at this point, lets see what you can do to make it even faster when its fixed

Sorry I missed you in chat last night as well mate, I noted late on that you were in but I was pished and ready for passing out so just went to bed. Catch you in there soon though, again, thats such bad luck, heres hoping to a speedy return to the road for you.

Unfortunately I have no money to donate but you have all of my sympathy, hope you still manage to make it up here for the loch lomond meet, pints of commiseration, or celebration depending how far on the repair is, are definately on me now, seen as we'll both be passengers by the look of it, we need not worry about how much beer is consumed

    I feel for you

Sort of been there with my rod bend incident.

Some hard decisions to be made now.

If you can't really afford your fuel bill then sell the bits off your car and go D5, I should have...

But then theres that 19T grunt...

    -----------

What were you doing for this to happen?

Were you running a 19T map?

Was it cold were you were last night? It was freezing here.

Not sure wat is wrong with it yet, but looking at it I wouldn't be surprised if the con rod came away from the crank (bolts failed). I will start to pull the engine out of it tommorrow so will let you all know soonish, the car was running a 304bhp map, was about 8C outside, and giving it a little bit of right foot (ALOT) LOL.
Well I guess when she does come back back on the road she will have to be bigger and better!!!
    Here's looking at a 12sec 1/4 mile lol

sorry to hear your news mate, this is something that worries me as im seriously thinking of upgrading my t5, what do you guys reckon is the max power you can realistically extract from these motors before serious failures as in speshes sad case become a real possibility?

Andi the max was always around 340-350bhp or 1.3bar spiking at 1.4 but anything touching 1.5bar caused the rods to bend which is why im genuinely shocked at spesh's car having a problem as it wasnt running a map to support the 19t so the power the car was running shouldnt have caused this to happen.

Simply sounds as though a part has failed and caused this to happen, hope you get it sorted soon and it doesnt cost a ridiculous amount to sort out.

    Bhp

Rumour has it, about 340 bhp or so. Much more than that and some serious fettling is required, plus the gearbox and drivetrain is likely to get a bit touchy. Unless anyone knows any different?

Spesh, it always sucks when your car goes big time.

I know a guy who can probably do you a new T5 unit or just a new bottom end for a good price.......he breaks only volvo's and deals in ex police also. alot of 850's and v70 stuff aswell as 700's and 900's

Call this guy and say Vince with the silver 850 T5 passed you his number.

He can be a bit disorganised but he's cheap.........i got a good manual box from him for £170, leather steering wheel with airbag £20, 850r rear spoiler £50, front fogs OE £60 a pair, etc etc

Dont know where you are but if he has anything you need we could meet up and go see him.

My money is on a stretched conrod bolt failing and thus the rod coming away from the crank as Spesh suspects as well, not a failed rod due to power, rods shouldnt bend anyway if the car is mapped correctly, the pistons would fail first I would reckon.

The oily smell before the bang is consistant with the conrod bolt having stretched, then the bang is when it snaps due to being weakened by stretching, and voila rod moving very quickly and not attatched at one end, right through the block. Though from speaking to spesh the engine has never been over revved, which is usually the cause of stretching the bolts, so could turn out to be a very unfortunate failure of the bolt, for no specific reason other than it wasn't up to scratch when the bottom end was first made. I'm curious to find out what is apparent when he gets it out and apart

Heres hoping to see a forged internals bottom end coming up from Spesh then, bank manager allowing lol.
