does the above apply to the 5 speed auto box found in the late 99 awd's?

I believe that the 5 speed boxes need fully synthetic ATF. Probably worth using Volvo ATF to make sure you are using the right grade.

wot about a manual awd-do i need special oil

there is some confusion as to which oil to use in the five speed manual boxs 97 to 99 so i bought the gearbox, angle gear and rear diff oil from volvo. had to drill and tap out the bottom of the angle gear to drain the oil, so i now have a drain plug in it. the oil was completly had it the car had done 95,000 its up to 105,000 now and as smooth as silk. and the traction with the awd is out of this world. the only upgrade from here would have to be a rs6, way out of my price range.
