Rear suspension "donging" noise, what is it?

I get a kind of donging noise occasionally from rear suspension like a spring is reseating itself.

    Is this rear bushes?

If so should I just replace with poly bushes?

    Hope someone can help.

    Cheers

Hello mate,i had a noise from the rear of my car a while ago and it turned out that the nut that holds the shock inside the car under the seat was loose and just needed whizzing up with an air gun.Or possibly the bump stop rattling about inside the spring if its come off? I dont think the spring would dong if your bushes were worn but please some one correct me if im wrong.

either a tired shock absorber or the top mount is loose or knackered. Also, take a look at the lower spring mount, theres a big round locating/holder bolted to the bottom of the spring seat if the nut has come off it'll dong.

Does it occur soon after setting off, or on the first corner? Had a dong...or was it a twang...on my rear end a few times, each time it has been a seized handbrake cable or inner mechanism and the shoes freeing themselves.

    Many thanks for the replies.

I think best course of action is head to a tame fast fit centre and get them to take a look with me.

If its something loose it should be easy to sort.

If its a leaky damper it should be easy to see - however the car isn't sagging to one side.

Britten-Mark - I drove of this morning and immedaitely got a loud "dwoing" from the back.

Then it was quiet - however it seems to occur at random times and often going over speed bumps which makes me think its not brake related...mmm

    Cheers all.

Sounds like the rubber mounts at the top of the shock have gone. Check by removing the trim in the boot floor and see if the cones have come away from the body. They are cheap to buy and can be changed easily by jacking the car up
