    Judders during Reverse

I wonder if I broke anything during one high speed reverse uphill. After that even on flat roads, the juddering is there, on the car's left side only. Any of you guys know the causes or experience it before ? Mine is an auto. All forward gears are smooth.

    Much thanks.

Sent it to the mechanic this evening, did a few hard reverses and the auto clutch is slipping. By the time I decided to call it a day, the car just won't move in reverse. All frontal gears are okay. So left the car at the mech and he gave me a spare car. He recommended me to have the whole gearbox change with a used unit from the chop shops. ATF level is okay but with a dash of burnt smell (due to the hard driving).

Question, can a new set of sprag clutch set the autobox right ? The yellow ERROR arrow lamp for the gear is not out, so I'll assume all the solenoid, mechanical movement are still okay but the mechanic advises against it as dismantling & re-installation of the autobox is quite tedious and there's no guarantee that only the clutches are at fault.

There goes my budget for 17" rubbers and wheels....

Just had my box replaced for the same thing.

Mine failed when it was put back in after having the crankshaft oil seal replaced, working fine before but car would just rev up and very little progress made on return.

Now have a second hand unit installed and will be looking to get the old one rebuilt.

Spoke with a couple of specialists and they say this sort of fault is something that is often seen on Police vehicles that have been reversed at speed up the hard shoulder etc. This sort of action is not recommended! There may be other reasons for the failure.

I have only had car since December 04, it is not ex-police and I do not drive it that hard. Just unlucky I guess.

Autos can be expensive but having driven a manual car for three weeks whilst mine was of the road I am glad to have it back!

Now your worrying me, mine has had a problem like this for ages, but I thought I had a duff joint in the suspension on the left.

When reversing I get a sort of rubbing/knocking type noise from the left hand side of the car only. It's always done it and I've had the car for over four years now without any problems with the gearbox.

I've checked with some local owners here and they changed their g/box because of this. One thing I cannot understand is : Why is the Reverse is the first to go ? We speng 99% of the time in forward motion and it's still okay but not the other way around. Is it designed in such a way that if the clutches are gone, you have at least the chance to drive to a workshop ?
