What size discs on my 1999 C70 T5??

Before I go about whipping the wheels off my car, I wondered if anyone knew the "standard" size of the front discs on my car.

i THINK i saw a post with someone saying the 1999 model cars have 302mm discs, but i could be wrong.

Anyway, IF they are 280mm, is it still ok to order 302's to replace them, or will i need a caliper bracket change?? or is that for 330mm????

    Cheers

There is a way to check what discs you have by checking the chassis plate. I'm not sure if it's posted on this forum, but you will find the information in the following thread on t5d5

    http://forums.t5d5.org/index.php?showtopic=3381

If they are 280s then you will need different caliper brackets to fit 302s.

Rufe is the man to ask about these parts.

Later models dont have such an easy identifier like in that diagram in the above link, though i can usually find out what size you have just from the reg number on P2's (the larger option on the P2 is 305mm diameter). That code in the diagram is a nice and easy way to find out, though dont forget, many cars have been upgraded to 302mm after leaving the factory with 288mm disks in the past as its a fairly easy conversion, and if so your code will be wrong of course.

it looks like non genuine parts were used for some reason, as that is not a volvo part number.

What advantage is gained by fitting 302mm discs if the pads are the same as the 280,i.e. same area in contact with disc, is it because they cool quicker, or heat up slower?

    Just curious

dissipate heat better then the 280s so less fade.

i may have asked you before, sorry if i have, but what calipers are they nath?

    Hi,

A larger diameter disc gives a bigger "braking torque". From what I understand by keeping the friction and clamping force (ie not changing the pads and callipers) the force applied to the hub is multiplied by the disc diameter so a larger force can be obtained by a bigger disc.

The braking torque is still based on Torque=Force x Distance so increasing the distance (ie the size of disc) gives a higher braking torque.

Or it is probably easier to explain by giving the comparison of grabbing a rotating wheel. If you had to grab a big wheel (say 2m diameter) it would be travelling slower (less rpm) and easier to stop than a small wheel (say 6inches) with the same turning force.

Please excuse the ramblings of tired person.

    Stu.
