I was reading some threads about this on VS the other day and I think some people put the TB from a 960 or 850 NA on.. I think its only a worthwhile upgrade if you are sticking a larger turbo on it.. as it stands I don't think the standard TB is much of a restriction and helps spool up on a standard set up.. could be wrong though - just going by what I read .

A larger throttle body will only help you if you have a larger turbo the standard 850 TB is not that small but if you do get a bigger one make sure you get proof that i makes a difference

Dont forget there is a hugh amount you can do before you need to change it cams etc etc

i'm sure there's quite a few people who know that Tim has done a lot of work on my car. i have mostly been there when he's done something to my car and i can honestly say his attention to detail and his knowledge is mindblowing.

the big difference for me though, is that if there's something he doesn't know, he won't blag it, he'll be truthful and tell me what he does actually know about the subject which means you can make an informed choice on the matter. small point but for me a very important one.

i have one of his throttle bodies as well. i have no idea how it will perform on anyone elses car. what i can say is that at marham in april i had a session on track without it, on the next session the only change made was the throttle body.

i noticed a difference as soon as we were getting ushered out of the pit lane. just seemed to have much more go in the 2 to 3.5k rpm range. didn't notice any difference at the top of the rev range.

    Hi Chad

I have had a TB from Tim fitted to my S70. I was looking at fitting a larger TB as part of a load of other work at the same time. After speaking with Tim I decided to go with one of his TB's over a 960 TB (which seems to be a popular option). The reasons being, from what I hear not only from Tim but others with experience too, is that a 960 TB is too big, and it almost turns the accelerator pedal into a switch ie, all or nothing. Tims TB is standard TB that has been "bored out" by several MM. By trial and error he has come up with the perfect solution. Granted I had my TB fitted at the same time as a few other bits, still a 16t tho. In my experience, it makes the throttle response so much more responsive. There is no need to plant the pedal to get the car to move, yet the power is still very controllable.

I don't hold with the fact that it's only worth it if you fit a bigger turbo, i am still running a 16t. In terms of actual performance gain? Dunno!? But in terms of drivability, it's an excellent mod.

On the throttle body aspect, i like irf have one of tims modified ones, i believe/am positive it helps pick up as irf says around the 2k mark, makes the car feel almost n/a (we have completely diffferent ecu maps)...this throttle body is not from a 960 or anything else but the standard T5 ...i know of two very knowledgable volvo peeps that had the 960 T.B's and have changed to tim's special...We will be performing a test at powerstation on the 22nd so let it be judged from there on...(get your orders in peeps)...

    Hi Russ

Interesting topic I think. Just a couple of questions...

What makes you say that a larger TB is only a benefit if you have a larger turbo? Have you done some testing on TB's on cars running different turbos? What do you mean by larger turbo? 19t, or beyond ie, Garret?

I'm still using a 16t, and the difference to how the car drives is like night and day. Granted I had a few other bits done at the same time! I think on the dyno day there is a car that we can do a before and after run on, which will be good. But i'm not sure that a power run gives the whole story, it's how the car actually drives that makes all the difference.

And on the subject of cams (just for my future reference!!), which cams do you run in the peril? I know a lot of people use NA 20v cams, supposidly to give a better top end. But I saw in one of your previous threads that you lost HP using them. So what's your thoughts on the best cams to go for? Should I want to at a later date!!

    thanks for your input mate.

    Chris

I don't think there is much I need to add to this thread as to me the proof of the pudding is in the eating... 7 fitted and seven very happy customer. I don't expect any peak HP gains on a standard car, on a modified one higher boost can be sustained to the red line. The main point of it is to improve drivability without sacrificing throttle control.

Russ if you have some criticism of the one I was asked to post down to you please do say.

    Hi Tim

    Thanks for the reply

Instead of taking it as a criticism why not take it as just my thought on the subject ? I maybe wrong

I have never changed a customers TB only my own one to a 960 TB but my car had so many changes from a stage one as it was i cannot answer what difference it made

To be honest i did not look at the one you sent for chris's car so cannot comment and did not drive the car with it fitted .

Its a shame that someone who is really into the volvo world takes so badly when someone else has an opinion. I have no problem with you at all i even tried to get you a refund on something if you remember

We all all friends here just love the same make of car

    Hi Chris

Have a look at what i put for Tim i maybe wrong its just an opinion i really ment that there is lots of other thngs you can do to improve the car

As for cams i am still testing different ideas as the the R&D continues ;-)

I didn't take it as criticism, that just how your post read.

I don't take it badly when others have opinions, that's why I spend over 3 hours a day on the phone talking and listening to others.

I have no problem with you either, it's just my Northern ways I guess, I find it a little rude when asking a question to only be answered with a Smiley thought as to me that is of no use at all.

As I have said in an email to you before thank you for trying to get me my remaining unfunded money back but it seems that even with the Pay pal transaction number your supplier could not sort it out so I will not pursue it any further as they as based outside the UK.

This is not a dig a snipe or a go at you Russ but I am genuinely interested in your 10BHP loss with using N/A cams over your custom ones. I know N/A cams are far from the best for peak HP as that is far from what they were intended for but I would be interested to see the graphs you got when changing to them over your own if you had made no other engine mods between the two runs.

    Thanks

    Tim
