    Emm quite abit!

If you imagine Volvo designed the t5 motor to be somewhat over-enginneered with steel liners and plenty of meat in the block and capable of coping with 300k and some abuse, whereas Ford re-designed it to be as cheap as possible to build, pistons run directly in the bore, with a nats-nacker between bores to make it shorter so the 6 speed box + engine will fit betwen the inner wings of a smaller car...

The ST engine uses solid shims against hydraulic which makes it less tall, but does use VVT on both cams.

That said it is a very smooth and grunty motor. It uses a very small turbo (somethink comparable to a 13g) and relies more on good NA tuning than the turbo to make the power. (they run a 9.8:1 CR)

However and what i cannot understand is the shocking mpg. If you drive an ST even semi hard you're looking at 20mpg, whereas a T5 would be bettering that even when a t5 is heavier and less aerodynamic.

    is that a start?

Hi Mike the B5254T5 (Focus ST/S40T5 LPT 225 BHP) is based on the B5254T2 (LPT 218 BHP) as is the B5254T4 (S60R HPT 300 BHP) the liner bores on all these engines are 2mm larger hence thinner than the original T5 so can cause problems if the engine is tuned aggressively and incorrectly. It still uses steel liners and is a real Volvo engine which IMHO Ford have used to great effect in the Focus ST, it has a compression ratio of 9.0:1 with a max boost of 0.65 BAR using 95 RON.

The length saving of around 25 mm and width narrowing was achieved by redesigning and repositioning of auxiliary components; these pics show the B5254T2, B5254T5 and B5234T3 (T5) liner to alloy thickness.

Ford recently released a tune up kit developed by Mountune/Roush which produces a drivable 260 bhp with no hiccups like spinning wheels, limp mode and cracked liners etc. very similar to the KU Focus kit which also produces a without hiccups but drivable 280 bhp. If you’re looking for more info on these engines it may pay you to do a search on VPCUK and also visit the Focus ST, VOC and T5D5 forums to mention a few.
