    Tuning a d5....

Just curious as to what the tuning capabilities are on the 185bhp d5 engine.
I have been looking at one against a t5.
I have seen certain sites that claim 226bhp with 460nm torque.

Is the remap the only mod or is it worth doing more for more power?

Also wondering how this would compare to a t5?

    from what I've seen a rica'd D5 will stick with a standard T5 upto a point.

If you can justify the fuel, tax and upkeep then T5 all the way - but a tuned D5 will keep you happy on the motorway - both from a torque/acceleration and fuel econonomy persperctive.

Like you I want an R or a T5 260bhp, but the latter are rare and the former only VFM if high miles.

Never really found an authorative "tuned D5 versus standard T5" comparison.

not an authorative comparison, but I run both mapped T5 and D5.

They are chalk and cheese, but I still am suprised by the d5, luv the grunt and throttle response, it just flies from no revs.

but you cannot really compare them. one does what one does

if you want power then t5 all the way, but if you value 40+ mpg and 600 miles to a tank then you know which one to choose.

I would like to do more to my D5, but it begins to defeat its purpose, which is smiles and economy. there isn't much you can do, and there isn't much choice.

    you can increase the turbo

On t5d5 someone has changed the wheels on their stock turbo to a GT-2260v (wheels only) and with a remap, exhaust, larger IC, and a few other bits has taken it to 251bhp but he started with a 130bhp.

i looking into it alot, planning to do something like this in the summer.

    Cool

I thought i would add to this thread, rather than creating a new one.

What are peoples opinions of the BSR PPC Units from partsforvolvosonline?

    http://www.partsforvolvosonline.com/...oducts_id=3740

The figures look slightly better than the RICA map.

    Standard - S60 D5 163hp - 340nm

    the BSR offers the below:

    Approx
    197hp - 470nm

the RICA map offers the below:

    Approx
    198hp - 435nm

Seems like the BSR is slightly more costly, but offers more torque.

    What are your opinions?

Does anyone have any reviews on the BSR units?

    Thanks Everyone.

Am interested if anyone has invested in these guys? Claim is ~225bhp

Hear the usual "BS" on the various forums but would like an owners view if anyone has committed.

I received my RICA PPC unit from Russ @ RT on Sat morning for my S60 D5 Manual.

I am well happy with the results, more torque, and the standard ‘torque band’ has now been extended right round the rev counter, pretty much to the redline (which is quite unbelievable for a Diesel). Previously, 2nd gear was the best gear for torque and power, but now I personally think both 3rd, 4th and 5th are now ahead of 2nd in terms of pull and speed. Its like a different car, still excellent to drive, there is no uncontrollable ‘kick’ in the power, it is just great power and smooth delivery. Since Sat ive been mixing it up really, on occasions, booting the arse off it, some little dice’s with the power and other parts just normal (economical driving). The lowest I had the average consumption down to was 38mpg (according to the DIM). Its now back up to 40mpg. It really does seem like its improved economy, but I will hold judgement until ive used this tank up.

On the motorway in 5th, the torque is excellent. You can sit at 70mph, and floor it – it pulls to 120 with no effort whatsoever.

I'm considering finding a Private piece of land and recording a run from 0-100mph as standard and then doing it again with the remap and recording it, i think the difference will be easily seen.

My dad and his mate have both had a drive, and they’ve been extremely impressed!!

My dad has a T5 C70 and were are going to compare them both side-to-side when we get time, to be honest, i had used the C70 for a few weeks and I think that it’ll be close to about 100mph or so. I think by the time the power in the T5 has kicked in, the D5 will have pulled a lead. But we will see.

The map I ordered was the Standard D5 RICA map, the sport map is not required IMO.

    3 word summary……..Worth The Cash.

Any problems with transmission handling that kind of power upgrade, I had heard that slipping clutches might be a problem?

    Red face

The diesel is a great unit in Volvos, but they are limited in what they can do. Respect where it's due but a well sorted T5 will always show a clean pair of tyres. Sorry, just fact.

Just had my 163bhp v70 d5 geartronic ecu remapped today, to 198bhp. This gives a combined bhp and torque increase of around 25%. The standard geartronic 163bhp v70 does 0-60 in 10.5 secs. If the performance improvement is 25% this means my 0-60 is around 8 secs.
However the real difference is mid range push. Held in 5th gear, I timed 80-100 in about 7 secs. I don't dare max it out but my guess is that its speed will be limited by the redline (135mph). Anyone tried the same?
