I am thinking of changing my headunit just wondering if this unit from 2005 will fit a 2003?

Dont see why not, I'd check the plug's / ring a dealer and pose the question.

This will fit but will NOT work as the CAN bus in the 2005 onwards is different from the previous model years. The HU-850 is as you say from the later model years and if fitted to cars from earlier model years will cause CAN bus lockups and will need visits to the dealer for resets. You can however fit the HU-803 which is from the earlier model years but it has to have an amp to function. Not sure what you have in your car currently.
