Question V40 Diesel Owners - What should I look for

Shows you how blinkered I am......just "stumbled" across a V40 diesel and kind of liked the look of it. Never knew Volvo made such a beast........or is it more of a pussy cat......

Anyone tell me which spec to go for and are there any known reliability problems/weaknesses with these cars.

What years where the diesels in production from and to.

Any info, comments, abuse then please make my day!!

I will be selling the wifes soon, she has a black sport lux. Thats the top model, the 1.9D comes in 2 models from 2001 onwards, a 102bhp and a 115. The 102 is quite underpowered, the 115 isnt bad at all. Vary spec levels s, se etc. Winterpack is desirable but not essential. Ours doesn't have it.

Miles, well same old same old, We sold the first one she had with 159k on it and it ran flawlessly, it only ever needed a bonnet catch in 39,000 miles. (except the obvious serviceable parts, tyres etc)

Depends what you have to spend. Kath gets 47-50mpg out of hers with mixed route driving.

I concur with justin, you should get a post 2000 car (cheaper tax) and the sport (115bhp) is the only engine worth having. Look out for all the usual probs with diesels.

    Thanks Justin.

How can I tell which diesel engine is the 102 or the 115bhp? Was the 102 the earlier version or can you have a choice of both power models within the same model year?

If I buy one of these then the price I pay will be the value of my V70R, ie, I may sell my beloved car and buy one of these.

    Why are you selling yours?

Some pictures may be nice so that I can see what one of these looks like in top spec.

    Thanks mate

You can have the 102 and 115 in the same MY. The seller should be able to tell you which engine bhp engine is in it, if not do your own checks.

Kaths is worth around 6k according to the book, but i wouldn't expect anything over £5400 for it in todays market. I am selling it as she doesnt need the estate anymore due to us no longer having a dog. I will be replacing it with an S60 D5.

Here is a lux model, half the miles ours has but lots more money.

    V40 LUX

Ours is black with black leather btw

Thanks Justin. How do I check which is the 102 or the 115? Are there any telltale signs in the engine bay, eg, different engine cover sizes, etc etc.

Like my Saffron R, were there any limited edition colours for the "top spec" models............don't want a "common" one ya know

I'm sure there are ways of spotting just by looking which bhp model it is, I personally don't know though

Not sure if there are any limited colours either, but again i may be wrong there too.

All I heard was that the sport models had the 115bhp and they also had the extra bit of spoiler under the front bumper, but other models also had the 115bhp engine and didn't have the spoiler. mines just a standar sport according to the guy who sold it, but it's got the sport lux wheels 6cd changer hu601 headunit and half leather upholstery with the piano black trims dotted around the cockpit.

Also the engine code is D4192T3 which is the code for 115bhp as far as I know. this should be visible on the vin plate.

to confirm - the 115bhp model has an intercooler... and a slighly different setup... if you require and more details let me know..

problems are shared with the s40/v40 petrol and diesel, check for knocking suspension, rear seals on the engine and generally listen for a ragged engine - when i sold mine it had over 140k on the clock and it still sounded very quiet.... it shouldn't sound like a peugeot!

i have a 1999 v40 1.9d. it now has 180.000 on it. it pulls well and sits at 80mph with no problems at all. make sure there is no excessive pressure in the header tank. (when cold) and the no blowing out of the dipstick. it should start immediately hot or cold, as they are direct injection.
