    Using non OEM parts

I'm a fairly new Volvo S60 owner and was wondering what most people on here think about using non Volvo parts.

I would be interested to hear people's thoughts on this and if there are any parts that people would only use OEM for.

Its important to use quality after market parts as some parts supplier would deem to be cheaper but they skimp on the quality products.

As for Oil Filters, use Volvo only, but thats just me.

As for Air filters paper based... I think Fram are ok, I think volvo are just repackaged fram filters. Anyone got some recommendations.

PFS do good stuff and are good quality also they use genuine volvo for a lot of their products. Direct from Volvo are expensive, so I hear what you are saying.

if you want to get any parts it can often pay to get a price from us at FRF Volvo, as our parts can be chepaer than non genuine at times.

We specialise in mail ordered genuine volvo parts to online customers, where the price you pay will usually work out cheaper than getting it from a local dealer, even after postage price is taken into account.

Its always worth getting a price from us even if you dont end up buying from us, you can be surprised. (Sometimes even a good surprise lol )

Oh Cr@p... at the time, I completely forgot about FRF... my apologies Rufe I should have posted up yours as well.

From what I have read on FRF parts, considering they are genuine, the prices are very good. I am going to stop suggesting businesses as I am not completely in the know to good quality genuine parts. I have been on the burn't side when buying aftermarket parts.

The good thing on this site is that Rufe is there for us all, for all that we may need.

Cheers Roy, as an example of some feedback i have had, i sold adamsky01 on here service parts for his new v40 he picked up recently, and my total price to him was less than he was quoted for from halfords for non genuine items, and that was with using the trade card.

today i priced up some parts for someone on here who told me that our prices were less than when he got them non genuine last time round (cam followers and a water pump).

I am not saying its allways going to be the case, as we simply cant compete with some non genuine prices out there, but generally its worth checking as the difference is not allways as great as you may imagine.

genuine for me for all service items.

may not be the cheapest but after a horrific experience with a cheap non-genuine MAF I'll always just pay the money from now on.

Spark plugs on a petrol T5 are a MUST from volvo - even other decent branded non-genuine plugs are poor in comparison.

Air filter and oil filter put together are under £20 so why bother looking at other cheaper stuff?

Oil... well that's a whole other conversation - but I've just bought 6 ltrs of Castol Edge 5w30 today.

    Thumbs up

There is some interesting replies which are just what i was after.

    I've just purchased the following:

    * Front wishbones (Volvo)
    * Rear wish bone bushes (Volvo)
    * Drop links all round (non OEM)

Hope fully this lot will cure the knocking noise thatr seems to have appeared after I bought the car.

For oil filters etc I think I would deffo use OEM.

itguy did you get a deal on the oil?

Received the drop links I ordered from Parts for Volvo online yesterday.

I paid for the cheapest delivery option and received the parts next day by recorded. Now thats what I call great service!

Lets hope the quality of their parts are as good as their service!

Car is booked in for the 12th.

I'll post an update after all parts have been fitted.

    Hi mate

Did you get any discount on the genuine parts you ordered? If you did fair enough, if not next time you could try us for a price comparison if its for genuine parts.

    I've just purchased the following:

    * Front wishbones (Volvo)
Just as a quick guide, if you bought a pair of genuine front wishbones from us you would find the total retail price is £206.82 inc vat for the pair, while our price is £165.00 inc vat and next day delivery.

With Simons (Rufe) pricing you can not go wrong .I will use my local dealers only for work to be done but not the parts.

Rufe I told a bit of a porky actually. The front wishbones were supplied from the garage I bought the car from the other parts I sourced myself. The discount you quoted is very good!

Drop links were around £15 each from Parts for Volvo on line (£45 ish from Volvo) and the rear bushes I bought from my local Volvo dealer.

In hindsight I'm probably going to avoid my local dealer for part as when I asked for a discount I got a pompus reply.

I would always try and fit Volvo parts where economical.

itguy where did you get the oil from?

I'm sure I read somewhere that Morrisons are doing a deal on oil.

    Good shout.

Only problem is my nearest costco is too far away which would negate any saving made in the price of petrol.

I'd rather source a genuine second hand part than most pattern parts.

If a part is paticularly prone to failure you'll find that you can souce some almost new ones from the breakers yard, as many cars will have had them fitted recently.

As for genuine, both FRF and MRG are offering cracking deals to members of various forums, which all but make pattern parts pointless.
